Measha Brueggergosman: Songs of Freedom

Massey Hall presents

Measha Brueggergosman: Songs of Freedom

Award-winning Canadian soprano, Measha Brueggergosman performs a special live concert at the intimate Harbourfront Centre Theatre on February 12 at 3pm, performing selections from her forthcoming album Songs of Freedom.

Brueggergosman recently opened the inaugural AGO Creative Minds: Art and Social Justice event at Massey Hall with a special performance of selections from Songs of Freedom. The album, comprised of Brueggergosmans take on spirituals, follows the 2015 film of the same name which documented Brueggergosman connecting with her faith and past, and honouring her Cameroonian ancestry with a visit to the country.

These spirituals are close to my Christian faith. They are also a very important part of my familys history. It is the music of my people says Brueggergosman. My ancestors were stolen from Africa and sold into slavery in the United States before finding freedom in Nova Scotia. The spirituals were born out of a time when my people were oppressed and needed to find a way not only to communicate with each other, but also to express themselves.
