Join us at Oakville Galleries for our first In Conversation event of 2023! Artist Helen Cammock will be in conversation with Tara Bursey, Director of the Workers’ Arts and Heritage Centre, Hamilton. They will discuss Cammock’s solo exhibition They Call It Idlewild, and address some of the wider themes that emerge from the work.

Tara Bursey is an interdisciplinary artist, self publisher and arts worker. She has worked in a curatorial capacity for the City of Hamilton, Craft Ontario, the Art Gallery of Burlington, the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the Wychwood Barns Community Association. Her artwork has been exhibited across Canada as well as in Copenhagen, Berlin and Eye, Suffolk, UK, and she has presented her artistic research in the areas of textiles, labour, and contemporary art at symposia in Los Angeles, Sackville and Savannah. Last year, she was appointed the inaugural Lassonde Artist-In-Residence at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. Born in Scarborough, Ontario, Tara lives in Hamilton and serves as Executive Director of the Workers Arts & Heritage Centre, Canada’s only labour history museum and multidisciplinary art centre.

Helen Cammock was born in 1970 in Staffordshire, the UK. She lives and works between Brighton and London. She has staged performances at Turner Contemporary, Margate; Collezione Maramotti, Italy; The Showroom, London; Whitechapel Gallery, London; Cubitt, London; VOID, Derry, Northern Ireland and the ICA, London. Cammock was the joint recipient of The Turner Prize 2019 and the 7th Max Mara Art Prize for Women.
