PERFORMERS

Moneka Arabic Jazz is a project reflecting Ahmed Moneka's journey and culture to the Toronto music scene. It introduces 'maqam' style Arabic music skills that he learned in Baghdad, Iraq where he grew up, mixed with African groove and rhythm that he inherited from his African roots, the well-known Moneka family.

Waleed Abdulhamid's group - Kush - plays music that echoes ancient rhythms from Africa combining the roots of jazz with today's jazz harmonies, fusing chord progressions with traditional rhythms drawn from the earliest of times. The Storyteller talks to the Band, the Band talks to the Storyteller and together they talk to the audience - the spirits who listen and are ready to open their hearts. The music of Kush retells tales of origin that flow from the Nile River, from the land of Kush and tales that are deeply personal.

LuA is Shameema Soni and Maryem Tollar. Shameema was born in South Africa and Maryem was born in Egypt. They both came to Canada at a very young age and have musical influences from all over the world including folk, jazz, R & B, and Arabic music. These influences come out in their original songs to produce a beautiful new sound. They are currently recording their first CD and will be joined by Waleed Abdulhamid, Ernie Tollar and Naghmeh Farahmand.
