The core principle of this course is that there is no wrong way to write about art. So we'll set aside the academic approach and work on writing strategies for engaging with art in different ways. Who is the artwork for? Who can gain access to it and who can't? We might think about representation, class, education, and diversity, but we’ll also think about joy and beauty. Why do we care about art in the first place? What sorts of audiences might we write for?

The course will begin with “Gallery 101,” a brief lesson on how to visit an art gallery. Each week, students will visit a particular exhibition, write a 500-word review, and share it with the class. When we meet, we will discuss. All exhibitions we visit will be in commercial galleries with no entrance fees.

RM VAUGHAN is the author of eleven books: four books of poetry, two novels, three plays and two books of nonfiction. His critical and cultural writing appears in national newspapers and international magazines, and he has worked for twenty-five years as an art critic and arts journalist. Originally from New Brunswick, Vaughan holds a BA and an MA in Literature/Critical Theory. He has lived in Ottawa, Montreal, Berlin, and Toronto.
