Enfant/Capuche

Enfant/ Capuche by Laurianne Simon, painter

The title of the exhibition, Enfant/Capuche, is a play on words that literally translates the English word, ‘childhood.’ For one of her paintings, the artist refers to one of her childhood memories of watching her grandmother’s flowery curtains, and the illusion that the flowers (from being stared at for so long) transformed into faces, characters, and birds. This memory is mixed with new painted moments of scenes indoors, where the artist paints her daughter playing, imagining, experimenting, and growing. Sometimes we are faced with the artist’s imagination that adds dreamy elements to the composition of her paintings; other times we notice the search for a memory through shapes and colors. Lastly, the viewer can also feel present in front of a scene of children having fun.
