Designing the Movies: What's Up, Doc?

50th anniversary screening!

Peter Bogdanovich turned lost luggage into a box office smash in this love letter to classic screwball comedies. The lives of a bumbling musicologist (Ryan O’Neal) and accident-prone grifter (Barbra Streisand) collide at a San Francisco hotel, creating a love triangle with his fiancée (Madeline Kahn). Chaos ensues. So does a now-famous 11-minute chase scene around the city (a comedic inversion of the one from Bullitt, and it famously cost a quarter of the film’s budget to shoot). This throwback was one of the biggest comedy hits of the 1970s, a self-consciously goofy romantic comedy that evokes classic Looney Tunes and is a showcase for the production design and costume work of the great Polly Platt, the first woman member of the Art Directors Guild. Presented with an introduction by series host Nathalie Atkinson. Tickets: $16/14.
