Automelodi (Montreal)
https://automelodi.bandcamp.com/
Formed in 2006, Automelodi is a constantly evolving project based around the solo work of songwriter/producer Xavier Paradis. With a career that spans over two decades, Paradis is a well-established figure in Montreal’s dense electronic music culture, releasing over time with various projects, performance line-ups, or under different monikers such as Arnaud Lazlaud. He also collaborates with artists like Liz Wendelbo (of Xeno & Oaklander) as the duo Liz and László, as well as Latvian Producer Dmitry Distant.
Automelodi’s music embraces and re-contextualizes a spectrum of influences that include the lesser-known European synthpop and post-punk of the latter Twentieth Century, combined with literary stylizations reminiscent of Gallic songwriters such as Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Fontaine—with nearly all vocals delivered in French. Following the self-released first EP, an eponymous album was released in 2010 by the now defunct Brooklyn label Wierd Records. The second LP, "Surlendemains acides", was released in digital format in October 2013 and then on vinyl in 2014.
Automelodi has recently released a third LP, “Mirages au futur verre-brisé” on Austin's Holodeck Records. After completing an extensive tour of Europe last spring, Paradis is now planning a string of concerts in North America.
DATAFREQ (Toronto)
https://datafreq.bandcamp.com/
A fixture in the electronic music scene since the 80s, Dave Rout has had more than a few music projects under his belt.
Techniques Berlin, !Bang Elektronika, Infor/Mental, Laundromat, Datafreq, The Beautiful Spies, and Autopanik to name a few.
He’s had the privilege to be a part of legendary Canadian synth pop band Rational Youth, both on record and playing shows with them in Germany, Sweden, and England, as well as here in Toronto.
He’s also recorded with Images in Vogue and had a side project called Jetlag with Darrin Huss from Psyche.
In 2001 he started a Kraftwerk cover project called Die Roboter, which played at 2002’s Synthpop goes the World festival.
Dave started datafreq in 2002 initially as a DJ project, spinning new wave records while bringing vintage handheld video games into the mix. He performed at a few of the underground Electric Workers parties in Toronto. 2004 brought the purchase of a vocoder and Dave took datafreq out as live project, playing shows at Nasa Dance Bar and El Mocambo in Toronto, and Sonar in Vancouver that same year. In 2006 he was signed to German label Das Drehmoment, who released his debut album ‘Fun for the whole Family”.
He played in Berlin that year for the album release party, which started an amazing friendship with the label, not only having tracks released on label vinyl compilations, but returning to Berlin to perform as Datafreq again in 2007, 2008, and 2011. More recently, Datafreq was invited to play at the “It is not happening” experimental music festival in Nuremberg in 2018.
This will be the first datafreq performance in Toronto in 15 years.
