A Married Couple - with Chandler Levack

One of the most celebrated works from one of Canada's most beloved directors, 1969's A Married Couple from filmmaker Allan King reveals a romantic relationship on the verge of unraveling. Set in Toronto and filmed in an intimate, observational manner, the documentary is more akin to a fiction film with its larger-than-life performances and volatile representation of marriage. By embedding his crew in the Edwards household for seven weeks, King was able to capture intermarital dramas as they unfolded, raw and unfiltered. Uncomfortable moments linger, revealing how mismatched expectations and power shaped the dynamic between Billy and his wife Antoinette. Uniquely capturing Canadian life in the late 60s, A Married Couple is a fascinating look at a once-bohemian couple straining under the weight of their now middle-class existence with its financial stresses and inflexible gender roles. Following on the heels of King’s breakout hit, Warrendale, A Married Couple cemented the director as a lead figure in North America’s direct cinema movement.
