Toronto Green Community's World Food Day Fundraiser
I'm going to celebrate World Food Day on Thursday by carefully considering what to eat for dinner. And lunch. And breakfast. The Toronto Green Community (TGC) hopes you do, too, and is hosting slow food guru Jamie Kennedy as keynote speaker at its annual Fall Harvest Fundraiser.
Showcasing great food, music and an eco-silent auction, the TGC hopes to raise money to support its programming and cultivate awareness about the importance of locally grown, organic food to sustainable communities.
Special guest Wayne Roberts of the Toronto Food Policy Council and Jamie Kennedy, co-founder of the Toronto Slow Food movement, will discuss local food and related issues from an environmental perspective.
The TGC is a nonprofit, grassroots organization that works with local communities on environmental initiatives, including issues surrounding energy, waste, water and green space. World Food Day is especially significant this year, as global food prices have risen a whopping 83 percent in the past three years, according to Oxfam Canada. A focus on local, organic food production can help reduce dependence on ethanol and fossil fuels, affecting climate change while supporting small, sustainable food providers.
I'm looking forward to an evening of tasty, sustainably produced grub, brought to a close with a pint or two of Mill Street Organic Lager. Yum!
