Fight breaks out after suspected Bud Light purchase from Ontario liquor store

York Regional Police are seeking three suspects after two people were assaulted and anti-homosexual slurs were uttered in a possible hate-motivated incident involving a suspected Bud Light purchase in Vaughan over the weekend.

According to police, a man and a woman were approached by several males outside a liquor store near Jane Street and Major Mackenzie Drive West on Saturday, May 6 at 8:30 p.m.

One of the suspects allegedly commented on the male victim's choice of alcohol and uttered anti-homosexual derogatory slurs as he approached the victim.

A police spokesperson told Global News that the suspect thought the victims made a Bud Light beer purchase.

"But it wasn't. He didn't actually have Bud Light," the spokesperson told Global News. "I guess there were some rainbow colours on the cans and so it was initiated that way … Then upon further determination as to what they purchased, they still weren't happy with that. Let's just put it that way. And the insults continued."

Bud Light faced a wave of backlash last month for its partnership with 26-year-old social media and trans influencer, Dylan Mulvaney, to promote the company's March Madness contest.

Mulvaney is most well-known for documenting her gender transition in a TikTok series called "Days of Girlhood." The partnership prompted tons of criticism from anti-transgender protestors who even vowed to boycott the brand entirely.

According to police, the female victim stepped between the two men and was then assaulted. Two more suspects then got involved and both victims were assaulted, and the male victim was knocked to the ground.

A separate bystander intervened and the suspects subsequently fled in a black Nissan Rogue vehicle with Ontario licence plate CLHL733.

The 27-year-old female victim required hospital treatment for her injuries, while the 26-year-old male victim suffered minor injuries and did not require medical attention.

Police have obtained photos of one of the suspects, who is described as a white male, 25 to 35 years old with buzz-cut hair, and wearing a black Adidas jacket with blue jeans.

The second suspect is described as male, with light-brown complexion, black hair, and wearing a Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal soccer jersey. Police don't have much information on the third male suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police #4 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7441. Alternatively, information may also be provided anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online at 1800222tips.com
