420 Day Yonge Dundas Weed

4/20 fete turns Yonge and Dundas into pseudo hotbox

Toronto celebrated International 4/20 Day with a "hashmob" at Yonge and Dundas on Wednesday. Graced by a a few hundred people, the Square was transformed into a scene right out of Cheech and Chong. The theme for this year's event — over and above just getting high in public — was "I toke and I vote," which led organizers to encourage those gathered to vote for a more cannabis-friendly federal government.

As seems to be the case every year, participants were mostly well behaved and the police monitored the proceedings from a distance — though they were probably close enough to catch at least a bit of the smoke-plume that erupted at 4:20 p.m. Following the event, participants descended upon all restaurants within a three block radius like a pack of hungry zombies.

Here's what it all looked like (save for the ravenous eating part). Photographs by Jen Tse and Tom Ryaboi.
