Butter and Spice is a black-owned, gourmet bakery located in the Mess Hall on the city's east side that's best known for making innovative brownies in a variety of flavours.

Pastry chef Marchelle McKenzie has trained and worked among the best, including time in illustrious kitchens including New York City's  Michelin-starred Eleven Madison Park and London's Restaurant Story, Lily Vanilli, Betony, Fabrique.

Returning home during the pandemic led McKenzie to focus on a nostalgic treat, namely brownies, and in unconventional flavours like banana bread and black sesame and Hong Kong milk tea. 

You'll also find cookies chocked full of chocolate and sticky cardamom walnut buns, as well as an assortment of sweet and savoury scones. Bonus: they ship within Ontario.
