River Queen Sinks

Break out the Razzies. Not sure if I have the vocabulary to describe how bad the River Queen was. The dialogue was lousy, the script unintelligible and the acting below par for a Samantha Morton movie. No wonder none of the cast showed up for what was the film's world premiere at the Paramount theatres on Monday night.

The director and producers, including the New Zealand Film Commission, were in attendance and had to take the lumps by themselves. More than a few people walked out and the applause afterward was whatever the opposite of deafening is.

I haven't seen this film yet but if the reviews are any indication, this is another example of what happens when you have a non-indigenous writer / director attempting to tell a story about indigenous people and their history (even though the center character in european). It's shame that after the global success of 'Whale Rider' the momentum has been brought to a complete stop.

I saw River Queen a couple of days ago and I thought it was a really good film to watch. It is true it has some editing problems but the storyline was so hunting that it made me go through different emotions from beginning to end. The music was beautiful and the whole idea at the core of the film, the relationship between mother and son and where she belongs was reproduced beautifully on film. I've heard a lot of critics about this film but I really enjoyed and I would recommend it 100% to anyone who might be thinking of watching it.
