Sunny Fong may have went astray last season, but his fall/winter 2011 VAWK collection was one of the best I've ever seen on the runways of Fashion Week here. It was that good.

Coats were the main focus of the collection, and DAY-UM, were they ever spectacular. There was leopard-print ponyhair coats trimmed with white leather and worn over nothing at all ("I WANT THAT COAT" was scrawled across the length of my notebook), fur-trimmed leather car coats, a double-breasted maroon coat with military buttons and a fur-trimmed hood, teal shortie jackets, wool coats adorned with a bold chevron of fur
marching up and down the circumfrence....The creativity with fur and trim was astounding.

Sunny Fong is more than just the winner of Project Runway Canada season two. The man has been creating "luxury" long before his re-introduction to Toronto fashion post-reality TV. With the help of model agency owner Ben Barry, the brand has been reinvented to assess a more luxurious clientele. The venue selected - the AGO - accepts this challenge positively by providing, as one editor puts it, "an intimacy that cannot be matched by any show during fashion week."

Boy, do I love attending Sunny Fong's VAWK shows at the AGO. All that natural light, the soaring ceilings, and the winding path taken by the models really makes for a fresh fashion-going experience.

And the clothes were lovely, too. With the intriguing theme of fungi (!) and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Fong put together an even more accomplished collection of femme fatale looks that show both his trademark ladylike grace and the fierceness that's been out in full force this Fashion Week so far.
