Lucian Matis takes over the Design Exchange
This year during LG Fashion Week Lucian Matis decided to embrace Bay Street. His show, entitled CHAOS, was held on the historic trading floor of the Design Exchange, in the middle of the Financial District. But it felt more like the centre of Paris or Milan, as Matis showed a collection worthy of Europe's biggest fashion capitals.
Gold. Black. Silver. A steady stream of statuesque models came down the runway in this glamorous colour palette, which Matis combined in exquisite designs on blazers, coats and dresses with exaggerated shoulders and figure-flattering folds. Chunky knits were paired with intricate beading to create unexpected combinations, like the sexy one-shoulder mini-dress with a black knit bodice detail that had the cozy feel of one of my grandmother's sweaters, but paired with an insanely short beaded hemline of which my dear old Granny would most certainly not approve.
Every last detail of the show was sheer perfection, from the flawless makeup by Smashbox and the Marie Antoinette-inspired updos by Schwarzkopf (which must have taken a can of hairspray each, just to stay in place), to the beaded tights, intricate shoes and tasseled-nails that completed each model's look (perfect on the runway, but what do you do when you need to open a can of pop?).
According to Matis, "every woman should have chaos in her wardrobe." From the earsplitting applause at the end of the show, I think the crowd agreed. But despite being astonishingly beautiful, most of the pieces are better suited to Lady Gaga or a high-fashion magazine spread, than a wardrobe for everyday wear.
Thankfully, for those of us who live in the real world, Matis is partnering with Smashbox Cometics to create the Lucian Matis CHAOS Cosmetics Collection, available at Shoppers Drug Mart and Murale this Fall. So even if I can't wear the beaded bodysuits or sharp-shouldered sequin blazers, I can still get a little chaos in my life.
