David Dixon does Barbie, again

Posted by Briony / April 5, 2010

I'm a bit of a hater when it comes to the Barbie-themed collections being churned out over the past year or two--I don't mind a corporate sponsor, but the collabos can be pretty saccharine. David Dixon's newest Barbie collection was definitely candy-sweet, but there were more than a few wearable pieces that would work for the real-life woman.

Dixon's prints are often a high point, and his Barbie boasted some great ones: a Chinoiserie-style silk shift, a rust-coloured pouf-skirt, and a pleated trench all brought a sense of fun and playfulness to the runway.

Fun, too, were the sturdy black minidress cut from a thick rubber-like fabric and the colour-blocked Mod-inspired dresses.

Some of the pieces looked a little cheap (like the nubby pink tweed skirts), and others were a little bland (check the boring black cocktail dresses), but, on the whole, the collection was a fun little foray into a Barbie-fied world--not a bad place to be after all.

I agree... yawned once or twice. That being said, a lot of these pieces are beautifully wearable, just not very inspiring or new.
