David Dixon Does Barbie, Boxy and The Bay
"What kind of woman wears David Dixon, anyway?" my seatmate to the left said in a wondering tone. "This collection is getting a little Bay-ish," according to the seatmate to my right.
Compared to some of the wilder young talents, old hand David Dixon's clothing is usually pretty safe, and yes, this season brought us little gray boxy jackets, sensible black shifts, navy silk halter-tops, and the like.
While the majority of the collection was pretty standard, there were a few bursts of chartreuse, acid-yellow, and lemon that would please even the pickiest of fashionistas, including the under-40 set.
Highlights included the trapeze dress with a hem covered in circular paillettes, and a lime-gold tulip strapless number in glowing satin.
But the two real beauties were the acid-yellow frocks with skirts covered in Giambattista Valli-like ruffle-rosettes, which came with a strapless or neck-high bodice.
I'd snap those up in a minute--and I'm nowhere near 40. Just goes to show that playing it not-as-safe can pay off.
