Inside The Holt Renfrew Media Cocktail
I was advised to arrive on time for the Holt Renfrew Media Cocktail. The cocktail has changed format slightly this season. The usual Saturday meet and greet with the designers has merged with the Cocktail and has replaced guest speakers as the entertainment. I think it's better to showcase Canadian talent than listen to foreigners speak for 15 mins. The heart of the cocktail is still the same: mingle, mingle, mingle. It really is a chance to meet up with friends and make some professional contacts.
The 3rd floor began to get very busy and there was a lot of pushing for position. Danielle and I were too close to the camera scrum. Poor Danielle got hit in the head with a ET tv camera, not cool. There were speeches that were short and sweet with no faux pas. Apparently Iman was in attendance, but I didn't see her.
Jeremy Laing, Greta Constantine, Mikhael Kale, Denis Gagnon and Philip Sparks presented three looks from their upcoming fall 2009 season. All five are not presenting during LG Fashion Week with most spending their efforts in other markets instead. The camera crew were going crazy when each set of looks came out onto the stage. We were dodging cameras left, right and center. It was a little unpleasant and there was no room to escape
It was a shame that the event wasn't the same length as the Saturday meet and greet. I felt that three looks wasn't enough to get a grasp of the collections but I understand the reasoning due to time restrictions. The runway needs to be placed in another location and there needed to be some more open space for people to spread out. I can imagine the show was difficult to see with all the photographers standing in the front.
