Did Orange by Angela Chen live up to the hype?

Posted by Kevin Naulls / March 31, 2010

Orange by Angela ChenThe Orange by Angela Chen show could not have been more hyped. The twitter trail discussed media appearances aplenty and PR buzzmakers ensured that we would catch a glimpse (if only for a second) of a mysteriously unnamed Italian Vogue editor. I did not see Franca Sozzani, but then again, I can be so gullible sometimes. Never again will I believe the hype.

A 23 look collection walked the runway - a series of black and white organza tops to match with an assortment of wool bottoms. As good as the construction was, the show lacked energy. Sorry Chen, you harshed your buzz.

Orange by Angela ChenAn oversized hand knit cape looked like it took a lot of time to finish - sadly, I found the colour to be too muted, creating the appearance of 'vintage,' a term I use with the lightest touch. It could have easily been a dusty cape found in your grandma's tickle trunk. Miss.

White silk organza tops looked smokin' hot - simply paired with a black wool pant, it easily translates to a daytime office look. I would recommend layering though, because tits out at work is almost never a good idea.

I wish there was more to report, but the looks became rather repetitive - I can only say so much about organza.

However, the show did supply some unscripted theatre. I noticed a model in a black hand knit finale dress that was having trouble walking. I assumed the shoes were too big, but a wardrobe malfunction exposed the real problem: weight. Shoulders would not stay up without double-stick tape (a lot of it), making my hand written check mark a big ol' X.

As for Angela Chen? She is a rock star already, dressing trendsetting clientele Chloe Sevigny and Kirsten Dunst. Maybe next time a "minimalist contrast collection" can mean more than sending repeats down the runway. She'll be back.

Clearly you have ZERO experience in Fashion. How did BLOG TO bring you on board as a writer? Tim?

Clearly, Jen, this is your first exercise in "the internet". Here, people are allowed to write what they want.

As a media outlet that has covered fashion week for a number of seasons and provided insightful reviews with accurate critiques, it's pretty unsettling that you have been granted access to this blog on a fashion-level, when clearly you have ZERO experience. Googled you and nothing, and that's NOTHING that popped up. It's too bad. Always loved the writing from Blog TO's Fashion Writers in the past. What happened to Anita? Let's bring her back at least when she's critical she tells it how it really is. Briony does a great job too. You're bringing Blog TO down 15 notches on the Canadian fashion industry media belt.

Ok Jen, take a deep breath. You may not agree with the writer but
wouldn?t you agree that your reaction to his writing might be a tad
overdramatic (15 notches, you don?t say?). Did you honestly lose
sleep last night over this atrocity of an article only to come back for
a second go? I have also read many fashion reviews and honestly find
his style refreshing and could not agree more with his critique.
Please relax. Writing styles and opinions (yours now has been dually
noted) differ and that is the beauty of BLOGTO.

I agree with Jen. Kevin Nauls sucks.
