The Best T-Shirt Shops in Toronto

Best T-Shirt Ever?
T-shirts are awesome. They're comfortable, machine washable, and always in style. As an added bonus, it's easy to print cool images and pithy remarks on them. There's no more convenient way to tell the world that you can't wait to procrastinate, you're with someone who is stupid or you should be kissed because you happen to be of Irish descent than to have it boldly emblazoned across your chest in 100% cotton glory.

So where are the best places in town to go to get the coolest tees imaginable? We recently put this question to the smartest and hippest people we could find (our readers), and here's what you had to say ...

I love Hardboiled! People in Japan seem to like them too because I'm always being asked where I got my "t-shatz".

I agree, Hardboiled is the best place for t-shirts in Toronto. The designs's are great and always create conversation, and you feel better knowing that the extra money you spent on it is actually supporting local artists and business.

I'm glad to see that Bang On, with it's ridiculously rude employees didn't make the list.

Wasn't "t-shirts" a recent item on the Stuff White People Like blog?

Posted by: Patrick at April 9, 2008 8:34 AM

I'm looking forward to the day that the SWPL blog stops making its way into daily conversation and goes the way of the dancing hamsters.

Posted by: Jerrold at April 9, 2008 8:41 AM

If you don't want to be compared to SWPL, maybe you should take a red pen to the hipster-on-autopilot intro, which just screams out for satire:

"T-shirts are awesome. They're comfortable, machine washable, and always in style. As an added bonus, it's easy to print cool images and pithy remarks on them."

That, along with the stock photo of hipster girl with bad hair, big glasses and lame slogan t (with a name tag!).

SWPL captures this page so perfectly.

What's wrong with liking T-shirts for all their awesome merits? Are t-shirts really a white person phenomenon? I don't think so. :P

Posted by: Jerrold at April 9, 2008 9:20 AM

*ahem* she's not a hipster

Posted by: williamsburg at April 9, 2008 9:26 AM

Honky:
What is wrong with the girl in the picture? That t-shirt happens to be awesome and she's a great fun person. Wearing glasses is not a crime, I wear them myself, so what? Plus it's not a stock photo it was taken during a party.

Posted by: Maria at April 9, 2008 9:29 AM

honky: you're kidding yourself if you think I have a stock photography budget

Jerrold: I can't believe you spoke ill of the dancing hamster ;)

Angry closeted hipster defends hipster-read blog about white people? Isn't that entry #503 on SWPL?

Anyhow. I really love Hardboiled as well - I've never actually visited the Kensington location, but I always visit their booth at the twice-yearly Clothing Show - they offer special discounts when you buy two or more shirts.

making fun of white people = shooting fish in a barrel

Can't believe someone thinks my photo of Eva is a stock photo. My photography is nowhere near good enough to be selling on a stock photo site. =)

Hey, don't forget about TO-based online indie retailers... My fave store for vintage tees is definitely Defunkd. What I like is that you can check out their goods from the comfort of home, too!
http://defunkd.com/
They've got rock, metal, punk, sports, movies, pop culture, women's and kid's stuff from the '70s, '80s and '90s. Choice selections, for sure.

A friend suggested T-Shirt Guys: I've had two jobs with them. Not only is the artwork FREE, but they actually wanted me to order fewer shirts than I figured i needed to order!!! They make their own shirts (better than American Apparel) and the printing is completely ecologically friendly
I can say enough good things about them.
Their customer service ROCKS!

I saw a 45 year old hipster yesterday. It was weird.

Posted by: Andrew la Fleur at April 10, 2008 11:28 AM

gee, wow!
I'm in Lisbon Portugal but I've been inside "The Shop" store in the TdoT. They have a lot of signed records on the walls...from Bruce Cockburn to Martha and the Muffins to the Kings, Poison, July Black, Molly Johnson and so on...a lot like the Icon "Sam the Record Man" store inside. But it's a t-shirt store. :)

The girl there is awesome, I listen to CBC radio and Vinyl Cafe did a little thingee on her...she is really nice. I got a few t-shirts, one was the "Parkdale Alive with Pleasure". That day, this guy was there getting t-shirts too, (www.denzalsinclaire.com/web/bio/index.php), Denzal Sinclaire.

Anyway, I do miss Toronto, hope to get back there soon.

Oh, their website is SpoT98.net

Cheers from Lisbon,

Avril

I would like to know where I could get some T-shirts done with various designs that I have created. I am only 15 and I can never find shirts of bands I like. I take the time to design them on my own and I dislike the quality of iron on prints. Does anyone have any recomendations for affordable places? (I am looking to do 1 or 2 shirts in basic colours- no more then 3 colours)
