FlickrThe Flickr team is in Toronto this week and will be buying drinks and snacks for anyone who shows up this Friday at C'est What between 6 and 8pm.

I emailed with National Flickr product manager Katheline Jean-Pierre who suggested the meetup was simply an informal get-together where she and a bunch of Flickr/Yahoo! folks hope to meet up with some Toronto Flickr fans. She also hinted that they might be giving out some new, free Flickr t-shirts to those who stop by.

Better get there early.

The Yahoo News Canada "Comments Section" was axed by the censors.
Give them a George Orwell Award.

I having a feeling, this will very quickly become a packed event.

This was already being publicized quite effectively among Flickr users in various relevant Flickr groups(including the blogTO group)as a Flickr event. I think putting up a big headline about free drinks is going to destroy the integrity of the get together. Why not go down to Sherbourne and Dundas and stick up a few posters while you're at it?

@ sniderscion - Flickr/Yahoo! reached out to us to help spread the word. I think there's a big difference between writing it up here and doing so in a more mainstream venue

Tim;
Thanks for clarifying that. I agree, there is a difference between putting it here and putting it in The Star; at least here there's a good chance people reading this might have a clue what Flickr is (i.e. a photo sharing website).
When I saw the headline I had a vision of the event changing from a bunch of photographers/artists getting together into a bunch of louts looking for free booze and wondering how come there were so many people with cameras standing around.

I met the Yahoo/Flickr crew tonight. Really nice, friendly, fun people. I wish I could be there Friday! Should be a fun meet-up!

...... dude .... why in gods green earth would you post this. aint that event for ppl who use flickr, not for folks looking for free booze.

Ry-Tron on August 7, 2008 at 8:08 AM

perhaps I can get over my fear of crowds and shoot some Dear Toronto video of the event.... but, the crowds!

Tim on August 7, 2008 at 9:07 AM

@saji - see my comment above. Also, I would suspect there are lots of casual Flickr enthusiasts who aren't active on the discussion boards that I'm sure would like to know about this.

While I think the writer's intention was good, the Headline is certainly misleading.... And totally off-brand. The Focus is celebrating the Flickr 888 worldwide Online Community Event organized by Heather Champ. We chose Toronto to celebrate this in Canada.

See official blog post here:

The complimentary snacks and drinks are not the core of the event, at all. We only reserved a small section of C'est What not the whole venue. There will be a list of people who RSVP-ed on upcoming. We will be checking attendees IDs. This Flickr meetup is intended for Flickr Users and lovers only.

Hope to see the Flickreenos there,

Thanks for your feedback and comments.

Ugh, count me out. Ry, I think *my* fear of crowds might come into play too surrounded by hundreds of drunken photographers in that claustrophobic space.
