Airport Police - Now With Added Nerd Factor

Posted by Adam Schwabe / November 20, 2007

Police T3s at Pearson
Watch out creeps, scumbags, and all assortment of miscellaneous villainy, Peel Police are sporting some new wheels at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, from the future. Starting today, police at Pearson International are rolling out new Segway-like three-wheeled electric vehicles to help them get around Terminal One quicker.

This makes Pearson the first in Canada, and only other airport in North America other than LAX to get equipped with the buggies . Beyond looking like distant cousins of RoboCop, they'll help police track down missing people in the airport easier, and presumably make life safer for us all.

Cops have already commented that the T3s are making rather quick work of traversing the enormous terminal, and reducing the number of officers that need to be deployed in any given situation.

As an added bonus, the vehicles run completely off an electric power source, and can make a top speed of 10 kilometers per hour. Police hope to order more next year if they continue to prove useful.

But do they have a coffee cup and donut holder?

What a waste of money, like they cannot walk on their own. The terminal is NOT all that big.

May be that only LAX uses this particular nerdmobile but I know that the airport cops in Chicago (I've seen them at Midway) use Segways.

Mark, actually the terminal is massive. You're only exposed to a small portion of it as a traveler. If it's going to help them find kids and stop crimes (AND reduce my overall Terror level), then I'm for a couple of them.

It looks more like powerwheels meets the big wheel than Robocop to me.

Many US airports use Segways. These things had better be less expensive, otherwise they are going against the grain and wasting money.

I hope they're rolling an exercise program with these ... otherwise those officers are going to be way out of shape fast.

Umm, if the terminal is that big, whats wrong with using bicycles? saves lots of money and it uses far less electricity because its powered by pork products.

It would be radical if it was able to fire electrodes against people who terrorise airports by refusing to speak English.

I know people are usually negative to changes and they hate to see money being wasted but save the life of one of there own or find their lost child and VOILA they totally change their minds. This vehicle has nothing to do with what police officers' do to keep in shape but rather how quickly they can respond in a call situation. So my suggestion to all is keep focused on the job being done on your behalf.
