College Street erupts as Italy makes Euro finals

Posted by Scott Snider / June 29, 2012

Little Italy Toronto Euro Soccer CelebrationAs even the most casual soccer fan knows, Italy defeated Germany 2-1 yesterday to advance to the finals at the 2012 Euro. As you might expect, College Street and Corso Italia erupted with fans who poured out of restaurants and bars to celebrate the victory. Is this a glimpse at what's to come on Sunday when the Azzurri take on Spain for the championship? There's no doubt they're in tough against the current World Cup champions, but one thing's for sure: you can multiply Thursday's celebrations by 10 if they do pull it out.

don't forget... Canada has a soccer team too - Support Local Football.

In fact, they are playing in Toronto to qualify for the World cup in September and October. It would be great to see support like this.

No different than the hooligans taking to the streets during the G20.

Where are the cops?

Awww, so cute how everyone somehow becomes an Italian once every 4 years.

@the hell, St. Clair already was closed down, of course the cops knew to do this

@kraut, actually every two years since this is Euro 2012. The World Cup is in 2014.

Canadians are completely irrelevant in international soccer. If you want a support like this one, have a team with the history that the Italians have.

Hooligans? Don't be envious. Pure envy.

Cheers!!! Italy, good luck!

Nowhere near as annoying as how everyone becomes Irish every year.

How can people watch a sport where a grown man gets tapped on the shin and falls down crying for 10 minutes? Footballers are such pussies.

Thankfully the Irish don't shoot their own on full patios.

Every superiority complex is based on a deeply seeded inferiority complex. Think about that my fellow Canadians. This is a country built by immigrants of the same profile and social status, mainly the poor and illiterate. It is funny when you act like royalty and make fun of Italians. At the same time you exhibit all negative traits of your toothless ancestors and you have not acquired any of the positive ones that they developed back home since your Great-grandparents left.

Brilliant - I'm all for their support of the national team. And why not? If they manage to win on Sunday, it'll successfully cover up the corruptness of their domestic league, where "often the dilapidated stadium is half-empty, and many of those who do show up throw firecrackers, chant racist abuse or speculate whether the match was fixed." (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/063eab02-c1fa-11e1-bffa-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1zCdQlOVa).

Forza Italia, indeed.

Get your facts straight. Firstly, the man who was killed on College St. was not Italian and the suspect was not Italian either. It was tragic and had nothing to do with International soccer or The Italy game playing that day or Italy or anything nationality based. If you're too ignorant to understand theotive behind that killing, then you're better off keeping quiet about it. Most Italian-Canadians grew up watching Serie A soccer and love the sport and the heritage and have every right to celebrate their victory. And it's not only every 4 years that "everyone becomes Italian", Italians celebrate their culture in everyday life, and just get to share that celebration on a national level every 2 or 4 years. But beyond the pettiness of people showing hatred, any true soccer fan would appreciate the way that the two final teams have played throughout the tournament. So if you are going to comment, how about you comment on the fact that this entire tournament has been filled with amazing soccer by several European countries, and let it remain the friendly competition that it has been historically.

My father, admittedly not politically correct, used to say of this: "an Italian will do anything for their country, except live there."

Anyway, if your greatest thrill is to watch corporate shills who dope and drop to the ground for a penalty when breathed upon, knock your pathetic self out.

One hopes the TTC will be temporarily taking the streetcars off the usual hotspots once the match is say 60 mins in. The sight of idiots dancing on streetcar roofs beside a 600volt DC wire scares the bejesus out of me.

You have to love the lead photo, where the kid is wearing an ORLANDO MAGIC hat just because it was the only thing in his closet that was the right shade of azurri blue. Ah, bandwagon fans.
