Gooooooooooooal de Torontooooooo!

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / June 18, 2007

Father's Day Toronto FC fans were treated to one heck of a game this weekend. Toronto crushed western conference leaders Dallas by netting three sweet headers and a fourth goal on a flurry of rebounds up close. Here's a video clip that highlights the action. It's awesome how the Spanish speaking announcer gets into it.

Toronto is second only to Los Angeles in attendance so far (in part due to Beckham coming in July?), and is sporting a 4-6-1 record - not bad for a new team!

I was on the Dallas supporters forum helping them figure out how to get to their hotel and the game (Toronto and the TTC are SO tourist-unfriendly it's not even funny.) Anyways, I think they were excited to visit given the reputation BMO Field now has around the league. Amazing that fans from Texas are coming to Toronto to take in the soccer atmosphere.

Note that TFC will have a tough time to catch LA in attendance because the Home Depot Center is 34% bigger (27,000). If you measure based on capacity, LA is running 84% compared to Toronto's 99%.

TFC! TFC! TFC!

Great victory before their looong road trip.

btw, who else loves the words 'GOL!' popping in and out at the top left timer spot? I know I sure do!

Dear Dave,
It's still early days in the life of the league. Let's hope some league officials and fans step forward to fill the gap that you've pointed out.
Let's see just how quickly this gets resolved.

Ah, I was not commenting about the soccer team being tourist unfriendly -- I'm sure they are very nice to visitors. I was talking about Toronto (the city) and the TTC (not TFC). Think about it -- Toronto is one of the last major cities in the world that does not have a rail link to the airport, so I had to explain to them how to get downtown for cheap. (Yes, you can take a GO Train from the airport to downtown Dallas for $2.25. Quite literally, since they use old GO Trains there.) The TTC website is very confusing for visitors compared to most US city transit sites and they couldn't find the best way, so I helped them with that. The streetcar line to the stadium should be a route on the TTC subway map but is instead on the bus map - incomprehensible! There are no Montreal-style maps on the streets to orient visitors and help them find spots to go, so another friend in town for a Jays game this past weekend called me in New York for directions to the Bloor shopping area. It's constantly news these days that Toronto needs to do better with tourists, and it's not hard to see why.

Some of the TFC fan boards are running "how to get to/what to do in TO" threads - including, ahem, activities for adults.
