Solo Sushi BekkanSolo Sushi Bekkan is a Japanese owned, tiny 21-seat restaurant located 2 doors in from Yonge Street on Grosvenor. In for lunch the other day, We start with the Sushi Lunch Special ($8.95 - top) which includes:miso soup followed with a delicate salad of fresh mixed greens with homemade ginger and carrot dressing.

Solo Sushi BekkanThe salad is refreshing, light and balanced. (I am so tired of those salads at other "Japanese" places with head lettuce, a sliver of radish and carrot drowning in rice vinegar)

The sushi (salmon, maguro and ahi tuna plus a spicy tuna roll) is absolutely some of the freshest fish I have ever had! I inquire and discover the fish is delivered fresh daily.

Solo Sushi BekkanThe Saba No Shioyaki (Grilled Mackerel) is grilled perfectly and is tender and juicy. A good splash of lemon juice helps to balance the bitterness of the mackerel ($7.50). It's a strong tasting fish similar to sardine but loaded with good-for-you fish oils.

Solo Sushi BekkanNo Japanese meal is complete without Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura. At Solo Sushi Bekkan the batter is practically transparent, crispy and not at all greasy. The shrimp have been eviscerated which pleases me greatly. I'm told the Chef changes the veggie selection seasonally to keep things interesting ($7.00).

Solo Sushi BekkanThe Sashimi Starter is a daily assortment of the freshest fish currently available. Sweet shrimp, salmon, sea bass and maguro tuna are on today's menu. The mouth-watering fish has a perfect texture and is fresh and sweet. The fish is cut on the thick side and this indicates I'm getting good value. I also appreciate the creamy wasabi paste that blends easily into the soya sauce. (Prices vary).

Horse Mackerel, Monkfish liver and Atlantic Blue Fin tuna are offered seasonally and the chef purchases all seafood (scallops, shrimp, oysters) from Canadian waters.

Solo Sushi BekkanThe House "Solo Maki" is a deliciously generous 10 - piece roll consisting of: tempura shrimp, home cured smoked salmon, asparagus, avocado, mayo and lettuce. It's dotted with tiny roasted white sesame seeds and happily each bite isn't too large. The rice is perfectly cooked, soft and moist. ($12.00).

Solo Sushi BekkanOpen Monday to Friday 12:00pm to 10:00pm
Saturday 5:00pm to 10:00pm

fresh fish brought in daily? not unless they catch it themselves. no way they can support that cost unless their prices are through the roof.

House-smoked salmon? Really? Do they sell that by the pound too?

Sushi in Toronto is such a nightmare usually but this place actually looks pretty decent. Thanks for the heads up!

Daily fresh "Atlantic Blue Fin"? You mean the one whose stocks have collapsed on both sides of the Atlantic? Bon apetit!

Thanks for the review. We walked by once and were wondering about that place. It's really cozy.

Really? Cause to me that means a lazy sushi chef. When it's thin and delicately sliced, sashimi melts in your mouth. I don't really want a chewy chunk of fish, do I?

I was there on Saturday. It was fantastic. The staff know exactly what they are doing, great suggestions. Extremely authentic. Will be back in less than a week.

when your setting up an invoive wth your fishmongerer/supplier usually sushi grade items have a free "Rush" attatched to the invoice. The price of sushi grade ANYTHING is higher for that reason, but it does allow for daily arrival so you can keep your food csts low and still provide great fresh fish
