De Sotos TorontoDe Sotos has an eclectic menu of burgers, salads, pizzas, and more. Its Sunday live music jazz brunch is a neighbourhood favourite.

Seriously good pub food. The steamed mussels are great, with sauces that vary depending on the day. The panko-breaded fish and chips are excellent and non-greasy. They advertise tilapia, but ask if they have haddock. DeSotos usually has oysters on the menu, often Malpeques. The nachos are great, with home-made tortilla chips and plenty of toppings. A side of rapini and spinach will prevent the onset of scurvy. The beer selection features lots of Ontario microbrews with interesting and out-of-the-ordinary selections from Muskoka Brewing Co., Amsterdam and Nickel Brook (to name a few).

I want so badly to root for Desotos. The 'hood is in desperate need of a local that serves good food prepared well and has a great selection of beer on tap. I'm afraid they've only accomplished one of the two. They used to serve amazing food when it was the Regal Heights Bistro, but it opened just before the St. Clair ROW debacle began, and before a younger demographic started moving into the area (something that's really only gained steam in the last couple of years). So Regal Heights Bistro downscaled to DeSoto's. Great idea. Unfortunately, the food got downscaled to the extreme. I think they do pretty good business, but I think if the owner upped the quality of the food to the level of say, The Swan, they'd be overrun. They're friendly to both barflies and families and, surrounded by a plethora of god-awful sports bars, the worst Firkin pub in TO (and that's saying a lot), and Italian restaurants, they're really the only game in town on that stretch of St. Clair. Not only do I want to drink good beer, but I want to be excited about the menu - not just settle for it. St. Clair businesses really need to step it up, cuz change is a-comin'.
