Radar: Short Story Shindig, Maps and Atlases at The Horseshoe Tavern, The Avett Brothers, and A World of Shorts presents Mission Impossible

BOOKS & LIT | Short Story Shindig
Tonight, Coach House Books, House of Anansi, and Vehicule Press present a literary event that will make your week, and it's all about the short story! Three great authors will read from their new spring releases in an evening hosted by Kerry Clare. You'll hear from Journey Prize winner Heather Birrell, who will read from her latest, "Mad Hope," Daniel Griffin will share some of his debut short story collection, "Stopping for Strangers," and Carrie Snyder will tempt you with excerpts from "The Juliet Stories." It promises to be a great evening for short fiction lovers in Toronto.
Type Books (883 Queen Street West) 7PM

MUSIC | Maps and Atlases, Zechs Marquise, and Chang-A-Lang at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern
A wicked triple bill tonight at The Horseshoe! Chicago's Maps & Atlases are touring on their latest release, "Beware and Be Grateful," and will deliver a set of their usual energetic and slightly experimental sounds. Texas imports Zechs Marquise have a "groove-prog" thing happening that you will want to check out, and T.O.'s own Chang-A-Lang are worth the cover alone. Tunes like "Ruth Was A Communist" are catchy, memorable, and just plain rock.
The Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen Street West) 8:30PM $13

MUSIC | The Avett Brothers
The Avett Brothers, a folky roots-rock band from Northern California, hit the stage tonight at The Music Hall on the Danforth. The core of the band is two brothers, Scott and Seth Avett who play guitar and banjo, and the group is rounded out by cello, acoustic bass and drums. Their sound combines crafted songs with raw energy and intensity. They are currently signed to Rick Rubin's American Recordings label, and are due for another album release sometime this year.
The Music Hall (147 Danforth Avenue) 7PM $31.50 - $42.50

FILM | A World of Shorts presents Mission Impossible
The NFB Mediatheque has a great evening of short films planned for tonight, presented by The Canadian Film Centre's Worldwide Short Film Festival. "Mission Impossible" is the theme for this program, and a number of short films with an element of struggle, entrapment, escape, and the like will be presented--they'll hopefully leave you with a sense that any problem can be met with a solution. This collection of films is slated to run approximately 95 minutes.
NFB Mediatheque (150 John Street) 6pm + 8pm $6 / $4 students or seniors
