Radar: "Fifty Sides of the Beach Boys" Book Launch, a screening of "Paper Dolls," and the 2012 Stylus Awards

BOOKS & LIT | Mark Dillon In Conversation With Liz Worth at Fifty Sides Of The Beach Boys Book Launch
This Is Not a Reading Series and ECW Press present the official launch of Mark Dillon's Fifty Sides of the Beach Boys: The Songs that tell their Story. The author will be engaged in a conversation-style interview by Liz Worth, who is herself a notable author of music non-fiction. Wilson's book traces the background of fifty of the Beach Boys' greatest songs with interviews, behind-the-scenes stories, and the like. There are many different perspectives on the music offered in this book, from those who made it, their families, and artists from the next generation who were highly influenced by this legendary group. Notable input comes from people on the inside, such as Brian Wilson and Mike Love, but also contemporaries such as Roger McGuinn, John Sebastian, Alice Cooper, and current players such as Matthew Sweet. Locals The Roughnotes will play a set following the conversation with the author, and many Beach Boys tunes are promised.
The Gladstone Hotel, Main Ballroom (1214 Queen Street West) 7PM $5 (free with book purchase)

FILM | Trans Film Screening Series: Paper Dolls
Tonight, The Trans Film Screening Series presents a special feature film, Paper Dolls. This documentary finds an 'embedded' Israeli filmmaker following a group of trans folk who have immigrated to Israel from the Philippines, and now work there as caregivers for the elderly. On their day off they assemble to perform in drag under the moniker "Paper Dolls." This 2006 film, directed by Tomer Heymann, explores the complex lives of this group, their expectations and dreams, and how these play out against the reality of Israeli society.
