New Year's Day Toronto

Radar: After The Ball Drops, First! by Dubslingers + Archi-textures, Reality Bytes, Motown Party, El Anatsui, Mountains Collective 2nd Art Show, Soul Sundays Launch Party

SATURDAY JANUARY 1ST

CLUBS | After The Ball Drops (Official New Years Afterparty)
New Year's Eve sure doesn't stop at midnight, unless you're Cinderella (sort of)! If you find your adrenaline is on overdrive, definitely check out Teranga in Kensington Market for an afterparty that begins at 5AM this morning and continues until the early afternoon. A nice selection of DJs will keep your NYE flow going into 2011.
Teranga Bar (159 Augusta Avenue) 5AM $10

CLUBS | First! by Dubslingers + Archi-textures at NOCTURNE
Another two-room blast at Nocturne this evening with mega-low end and groove for miles. Sounds that "span the spectrum of beats and bass" is the order of the eve. Tonight's crew includes Shankar, Martin Fazekas, Kadmon, Gnoman, and more.
Nocturne Club (550 Queen Street West) 9PM $5

CLUBS | Reality Bytes at Augusta House (90's Party)
No better time than the New Year to get way-back to everyone's fave decade - the 90s! Tonight's party at the Augusta House will celebrate the decade of Grunge, Shoegaze, Riot Grrls, and more!
Augusta House (152 Augusta Avenue) 9PM FREE

CLUBS | Motown Party
We have Berry Gordy's blessings to get funky at this shindig tonight. There will be vinyl spinning as well as some Northern Soul vibes, plus modern remixes of classic tracks. This is the "Go Go" you might be going to...
751 (751 Queen Street West) 10PM $5 before 12AM

ART | El Anatsui at The ROM
Ghanian sculptor and installation artist, El Anatsui's unique style is definitely worth investigating. Turning to unusual media such as torched wood cut with chainsaws, garbage, tinfoil, and the like, he is able to make beautiful works. A great take on "recycling" with political overtones.
Royal Ontario Museum (100 Queen's Park) Opens 10:30AM $22

SUNDAY JANUARY 2ND

ART | Ragamala: Garland of Melodies @ The ROM
There's a reason why Indian culture rose to the forefront of Western pop culture in the 1960s... And has been back on our radar for a decade or so. The term "ragamala" literally means a "garland of ragas", but it also refers to a special type of painting that flourished in India in the 1700s and later. Each painting illustrates a specific raga, and poetry that has come to be associated with that raga. Today's exhibit at the ROM will also provide audio examples to give a wider picture of this cultural phenomenon.
Royal Ontario Museum (100 Queen's Park) Opens 10:30AM $22

ART | Mountains Collective 2nd Art Show
Function 13 offers an enjoyable evening in Kensington Market, with seven artists and photographers displaying some recent work. What could be better than taking in some cutting edge street-level visuals while enjoying drinks, and music provided by Everlea and Alexander Fairchild.
Function 13 (156 Augusta Avenue) 7PM FREE

MUSIC | Rockabilly Brunch @ Dominion On Queen
A good meal made with "local ingredients", and a great selection of beers could only be taken up a notch with... some great music. That's what the Rockabilly Brunch is all about! Cool cats will also dig the dancefloor, for sure. Alistair Christl and guests provide the music for this feast that goes on until 3PM.
Dominion On Queen (500 Queen Streeet East) 11AM

CLUBS | Soul Sundays Launch Party
There's a new Sunday night hang, and it starts tonight. Soul Sundays will have you shakin' your money maker like no tomorrow, with DJ Millius The Conqueror at the helm, spinning Soul/Funk/Motown/R'n'B/ and Early Rock 'n' Roll.
751 (751 Queen Street West) 10PM $5 before 12AM

ART | Sunday Scene - Michal Maciej Bartosik
Another interesting Sunday Scene at The Power Plant, where a different speaker visits each week and shares their perspective regarding the 'goings on' at the gallery, and the art world at large. Michal Maciej Bartosik has experience in both the world of art, and architecture. His work includes installation art, and "digital diagrams".
The Power Plant (231 Queen's Quay West) 2PM FREE with gallery admission.
