Radar: Nuit Talks, The Book Revue: American Splendor, Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, Turbogeist, History of Gerrard Chinatown

ART | Nuit Talks
Nuit Blance is this weekend and no one will let us forget it. Leading up to the big night, there will be a series of "Nuit Talks" Each night there will be a different panel discussion at a different bar on a different topic. Tonight it's the Gladstones' turn for hosting, and they'll be discussing the repositioning of art from traditional galleries into public spaces. And don't forget, Saturday night is when it all begins!
The Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St W, Free, 7-8:30pm

FILM | The Book Revue: American Splendor
In this month's edition of The Book Revue, they're paying tribute to the late Harvey Pekar with a screening of American Splendor. The film is an adaptation of Pekar's autobiography of the same name and stars Paul Giamati as the man himself. It's definitely a great film and if you haven't seen it, now would be a perfect time to see it, with a discussion hosted by Geoff Pevere afterwards.
The Revue Cinema, 400 Roncesvalles Ave, $10, 6:45pm

FILM | Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story
Continuing today's trend of films about dead icons, Double Double Land will be showing Superstar tonight. The film was made by Todd Haynes (I'm Not There, Far From Heaven) during film school and focus' around Karen Carpenter, of The Carpenters, and her eating disorder near the end of her career. The best part about it, is the film is made entirely with barbies. Two shorts will be screened before including the awesome Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No. It's almost worth it just for that.
Double Double Land, 209 Augusta, Free, 9pm

MUSIC | Turbogeist
UK thrash-rockers Turbogeist played two ripping sets this summer during NXNE and are now back for everyone that missed them the first time around. They're back in Canada for a fall tour and stopping by into The Silver Dollar for a probably even crazier show with Pkew Pkew Pkew, Set Generator and R.A.P.E Tazer. You can check out the Facebook event page for all the set times.
The Silver Dollar, 486 Spadina Ave, $8, 8:30pm

LECTURE | The History of Gerrard Chinatown
Toronto history buffs can placate their nostalgia with a visit to the Riverdale Library for a lecture and discussion of Toronto's other Chinatown, located in and around Broadview and Gerrard. I'm sure the audience will be predominantly older. But, forgetting this, it should be a fascinating look at an area that's rarely in the spotlight.
TPL, Riverdale Branch, Free, 6pm
