Radar: January 9, 2009

Toronto event listings for Friday, January 9, 2009:

1. Ben Tour - Electric Orphans
If eyes are the window of the soul, then the subjects of Ben Tour's Electric Orphans have some haunting secrets to tell. Very limited edition prints are available. Opens tonight and runs to February 15.
Meta Gallery. 33 Mill St, Unit 37, (416) 955-0500.
ART / 7-10pm / free / website

2. Street Poets & Visionaries: Selections from the UbuWeb Collection
Showcases the best street poetry art from UbuWeb's avant garde collection. Featured is late poet David Daniels, who used word processing programs to create visual poetry in the shape of rectal thermometers and a New Yorker "pissing on the sidewalk". As long as he's not to blame for the ASCII Christmas trees appearing on my Facebook wall, I'm intrigued. Opens tonight and runs to February 14.
Mercer Union. 1286 Bloor Street W, (416) 536-1519.
ART / 7pm / free / website

3. The Second City Pinjas - Up Your Alley
The Second City Pinjas come together in another comedy revue, with proceeds going towards the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women against Rape. Laugh and feel good about giving at the same time.
The Second City. 51 Mercer Ave, (416) 343-0011.
COMEDY / 11pm / $11 / website

4. Out of Balance: ExxonMobil's Impact On Climate Change
This free screening exposes ExxonMobil's misinformation campaign and influence on society's decision-makers. Presented by the Students Against Climate Change at U of T -- saving the world, one free documentary at a time.
Hart House. 7 Hart House Circle, (647) 342-7995.
FILM / 7pm / free / website

5. Rock n' Roll Wedding Anniversary 5
Hot indie thangs Mantler, Gravity Wave, and Wax Mannequin play the Main Hall in front of well-dressed 20- and 30-somethings. Semi-formal dress, please. Cross your fingers and hope your boyfriend's ex-lover doesn't wear the same outfit.
Tranzac. 292 Brunswick Avenue, (416) 923-8137.
MUSIC / 8pm / $5 / website

6. Zona Pellucida & The Needle Exchange
A double-shot of theatre sexiness, beginning with 2boys.tv's Zona Pellucida, which merges "music hall, high drag, and video design" with a "wild take on blue-screen puppet theatre". If this was an ad for art school, I'd have been at the admissions counter years ago. Followed nightly by Keith Cole's variety program, The Needle Exchange. Runs to January 24.
Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. 12 Alexander Street, (416) 975-8555.
STAGE / 8pm / $15-29 / website

7. The Wedding Show at the Carlu
Event planners, brides, and lucky maid of honours, bring your notebooks and prepare to drop some money... or be paralyzed by the options and consider eloping instead.
The Carlu, 444 Yonge Street, 7th Floor.
OTHER / $20 / F 5-9pm, SA 10-6pm, SU 10-5pm / website
