WorldPride / NXNE / Nuit Rose Showcase with Tom Robinson, WTCHS, Urvah Khan

Toronto Pride, North by Northeast, and Nuit Rose Collaborate to Present Legendary Queer Icon Tom Robinson

In celebration of the first ever WorldPride celebrations in North America, and the 20th anniversary of NXNE, the two festivals have collaborated to present an intimate showcase with one of the first openly gay musicians to promote LGBT rights through his music. Tom Robinsons single, Glad to be Gay, was originally written for a London gay pride parade in 1976, inspired by the directness and confrontational style of the Sex Pistols, and remains a gay anthem today. This will be his only North American appearance.

Also on the bill are rising local acts WTCHS and Urvah Khan. Arrive early for a retrospective set of 70s/80s British queer themed music by DJ Triple-X starting at 8pm.

This is a ticketed event by paid admission $10 - $15 or with a NXNE wristband. www.nxne.com

Performer Bios

DJ Triple-X

Self-described as electro-sexual, DJ Triple-X creates, innovates, entertains, and salutes you.

Tom Robinson

A legendary UK songwriter and broadcaster. Known in the 70's as an anti-racist and LGBT campaigner, he has released 19 albums with various bands between 1975-2001. He's now an award-winning presenter at BBC Radio 6 Music.

WTCHS

Frantic and thundering gritty post-punk for fans of Sonic Youth, cassette tapes, noise, and Odonis Odonis. Hamilton's WTCHS picked up acclaim for their last NXNE appearance, the Toronto Star remarking: "WTCHS were downright hair-rising during their NXNE set... all merciless, mathematical precision, and in-the-red intensity."

Urvah Khan

If rock is dead, then Urvah Khan has the power of resurrection. She calls it "scrap" music, her songs combining rock, world, and electronic influences. It's less about genres though and more about the ride.

Diggy the DJ

From a very young age David Ferris, better known as Diggy The Dj, has been a diehard fan of hip hop music and a true lover of all its culture. Inspired by groups, DJs, and producers such as A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Premier, and Dr. Dre, it was clear that he had to be a part of this emerging underground scene. Years spent honing his craft behind the turntables soon led into a fruitful, permanent position with Down With Webster. Come wile out to one of his raw, rowdy, and extremely versatile sets.
