Gender Identity and Expression in the Workplace

In 2012, the Ontario Legislature unanimously passed Toby’s Act, a Bill that added “gender identity” and “gender expression” to the list of prohibited grounds of discrimination found in the Ontario Human Rights Code. More recently, in April 2014, the Ontario Human Rights Commission released their Policy on preventing discrimination because of gender identity and gender expression. With these changes, it is important that employers are aware of their legal responsibilities and are working to remove barriers to employment for transgender people.
