Does your kid love watching movies? Are they crazy about video games? Join BYTE for a weekend Tech Adventure for kids of colour featuring two of the industry’s most known forms of creativity: Game Design and Film! With a full day focused on each at Humber College, kids will leave the weekend workshop with a functioning online game AND an exciting movie trailer. More importantly, they’ll discover how their new found skill sets translate in the real world. We have a 2:1 ratio of volunteers to children. All of our volunteers are people of colour who study technology or have exciting jobs in the field.

On Saturday and Sunday morning, kids will dive into the process of making a movie trailer using iMovie, a video editing tool. In teams, they’ll learn how to build story archs, make storyboards and shoot and edit video. Our instructor, Brandon Lewis, a Humber College Film and Television student, award winning filmmaker and person of colour, will give a fun first-hand experience into the industry.

In the afternoons, kids will learn how to use Scratch, a free, beginner-friendly coding software. Using easy colourful coding blocks, they’ll learn how to program goals, points, sound effects and obstacles. In pairs they will design characters, realms, and villains to create a compelling unique online game. Ashley Lewis, a award winning coder, Digital Media Producer, youth tech education and person of colour will be leading this part of the day.

On Sunday from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm, friends, family and faculty are welcome to join us for our Red Carpet event that will showcase the final films and games from the weekend.

What is BYTE?

BYTE (an acronym that stands for Black Youth in Tech Education) encourages children of colour to get engaged in the creative technological arts. As active members of the tech community, working in the film and coding industry, we’ve noticed a need to fill a diversity gap that exists in the profession. The best way to change the divide is to start young and encourage kids of colour to see the creative technological field as the exciting career option that it is! All of our instructors and volunteers are people of colour who work in the field of technology or use technology on a daily basis. We're here to pass on a passion for technology and help get your child inspired about using being active producers of digital content.
