Nicole Collins' work has explored application and construction in equal parts with removal and re-construction over the course of the past several years. Her painting practice consistently employs the encaustic medium. In this recent body of work, Collins shreds burlap into pieces, assembles jute twine into sculptural masses and stitches pieces together. Collins encaustic paintings are often immense and surprisingly weighty. However, the works in this exhibition are not heavy. The suspended pieces of monochromatic encaustic lay lightly supported. The fibers of each burlap piece are embedded, thoroughly entrenched, with the encaustic materials. Untethered and free from the frame and its stretched material. The plane and its rendered image, have each been cast aside. - excerpts from essay by Julia Abraham

Since 1994 Collins has exhibited in 12 solo exhibitions including The Embassy of Canada in Tokyo and The AGO Young Gallery and many group exhibitions in Toronto, New York, London, Zurich. Most recently Collins exhibited a series of large scale paintings at McMaster Museum of Art Breaking Black and The University of Waterloo Art Gallery Heavy Black Paintings. Her work has been featured in magazines, newspapers and books including: Time Out London, Canadian Art Magazine, Canadian House & Home, numerous reviews in The Globe & Mail, Roald Nasgaards major survey Abstract Painting in Canada, Carte Blanche, Volume 2: Painting 2009, The Donovan Collection Catalogue and A Concise History of Canadian Painting, 3rd Edition by Dennis Reid among many others.
