Toronto Environmental Alliance releases mayoral candidates report card

Posted by Derek Flack / October 13, 2010

Following up on its mid-campaign mayoral report card, The Toronto Environmental Alliance has released the results of a survey aimed to show where the leading four candidates stand on green initiatives.

Not surprisingly, Joe Pantalone came out on top, just edging George Smitherman, while both Rob Ford and Rocco Rossi earned failing grades (i.e. F).

It should be noted, however, that according to the TEA, "Both Mr. Ford and Mr. Rossi were repeatedly contacted but both refused to answer the survey." I'm not sure what that says for the legitimacy of the grading rubric, but I suppose if you don't turn in your assignments you're bound to fail.

To view the report in its entirety, including the grades of council candidates, check out the TEA website.

Yes, it's clearly fair to fail somebody for refusing to participate in a survey that is not a required part of the process.

Given Ford's unapologetically idiotic platform - what do you think is more likely? They (Ford / Rossi) didn't respond because they don't have to OR they don't have a policy on green initiative?

It is beneficial for candidates to engage the public whenever possible unless you have something to lose.

As a Torontonian of 20 years, this election is embarrassing.

I saw the questionnaire in question. The only way to get an A+ was pretty much to commit to upholding Miller's legacy. While a lot of the environmental initiatives made perfect sense, there were also committments to keep Hydro and TTC public. This has more to do with ideology then with environment.

Nevertheless I would advise both Rossi and Ford (especially Ford) to show their committment to the environment. Not being on board with interest groups like TEA is one thing - not being committed to the environment will lose them the election.

I'm really tired of what special interest groups think. Really tired.

I found this website that tells what happened when Rob Ford was mentioned at a Toronto Thanksgiving dinner - seems like what might happen if he wins: http://robfordturkey.wordpress.com/

Losing TEA votes will hurt Rossi but I can't see it hurting Ford one iota - it will be a badge of honour for his support.

I am bemused that while TEA obsesses about keeping TTC 100% public it asks the candidates absolutely nothing about the Toronto Parking Authority. The City should get out of the offstreet parking business - it makes sense that the city should operate on the public boulevard but for off street it should be a regulator not a competitor.

If you think Ford is going to repeal gay rights and reform immigration for the worse you don't understand municipal politics.

And your blog sucks.
