Emery Village one step closer to giant flagpole

Posted by Robyn Urback / August 16, 2010

Finally, Toronto can show face with those jerks in Athens and their largest container of body cream.

After an executive committee vote today, Emery Village is one step closer to erecting the tallest flagpole on the continent. The committee unanimously backed a proposal to build a 125-metre pole bearing a Canadian flag the size of a football field.

The Emery Village BIA has agreed to chip in for the estimated $3.5 million pole slated for a vacant lot near Finch Avenue West and Highway 400. The BIA has also promised to foot land purchasing and upkeep costs.

Full council still needs to approve the proposal. If all goes "well," former mayoral candidate and standing city councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, who has been championing the project, predicts the pole will be erected July 2011.

Mr. Mammoliti has also been prodded for seeming to wield an undue share of influence at the Emery Village BIA, now the biggest in North America in geography and membership, which he fought to bring into existence five years ago.

Councillor Howard Moscoe (Eglinton Lawrence) recently referred to it as the “Mammoliti BIA” — and some locals say that’s no exaggeration. As business owners along Islington Avenue in York West seek to form their own BIA, for instance, some feel their territory and tax levies risk being gobbled up by the expanding entity. “Emery Village was founded by the Councillor. It’s his baby. So obviously he wants to grow it,” said Adriana Fanti, who is seeking to form a new group, so far unsuccessfully.
