New area code likely for Toronto

Great news for socially ostracized 647ers; your days at the bottom of the area code totem poll may be numbered! (Excuse the pun.)

A third area code is in the works in Toronto as the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has warned that the city is at risk of running out of numbers in five years. The CRTC announced yesterday it will be setting up a relief planning committee to deal with the problem. It is likely that a new area code will be chosen in the fall and put to use in four years.

CRTC spokesperson Denis Carmel attributed the problem to competition. As new phone companies emerge, large blocks of numbers are taken. An area code in Canada has the potential for 7.5 million unique numbers.

To those worried about remembering all those numbers: well, scientists have discovered that even monkeys can memorize 10 numbers! Are you stupider than a monkey?
