TTC wants streetcar riders to "Meet Your New Ride"

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / May 10, 2010

new TTC LRV LRT designThe TTC is in the latter stages of tweaking the design elements of the new fleet of LFLRVs (low floor light rail vehicles) that are destined for Toronto streets in 2013. These are the new generation of streetcars that will drive all of our existing streetcar track and also provide service on forthcoming waterfront routes.

But before making decisions final and before we get to see three prototype vehicles late in 2011, the commission is reaching out to riders for another round of input from the public.

Check out the TTC's flashy LRV page, submit your design ideas, and help Toronto come up with a name for our new streetcar.

is anyone else concerned that the low-floor vehicles will take away from the nice view one gets riding in a streetcar?
i've heard people talk about the queen street car being one of the great public transit rides in north america, and stuff like that. but if suddenly parked cars are the view, it'll probably be a little bit underwhelming.

That's very true Nick. Although I think that subways (which are underground) are what now-mature and dense Toronto needs, especially in the downtown core, the streetcars have always provided a great view while riding in them. It creates feelings of appreciation for many of Toronto's beautiful views and areas, and it has created a feeling that the streetcar is definitely a soul and feel of Toronto. I think they could have the new streetcars, but I feel that they should also continue using the current streetcars in designated routes - for our identity's sake and for tourism.

is that really a ttc website? it's easy to navigate, straightforward and clean looking, unlike ttc.ca. i'm more likely to read it, give input and feedback! good job on this one ttc!

Just release the goddamn things already.

For the love of Christ, now the TTC has to showboat what the rest of the developing world already has?!!!!!

These streetcars are nothing new.

These bohemiths should be on the road already.

Enough of the window dressing.

i assume they have some infrastructure tweaks to make before they can be deployed.
and let's not forget that they have to manufacture the things! i don't believe there is some factory out there churning out light rail vehicles like a ford plant.

@nick -- Thank You! Also the vehicles have to be manufactured to the city's track gauge and other such things specific to our streetcars.

Secondly, I'm not sure if these new streetcars are going to have the layout of the new buses; but I've been on some TRAMS in Europe similar to these which the rear, or certain sections of the train are raised, so you can continue to get that high up feeling. But to me, I'm not at all concerned about that, I just wanna see these new puppies in action!

It's true the view might not be as nice, but the current street cars are very hard to board with a stroller, which makes them very parent-unfriendly. If the new cars are low-floored and wide-doored, it will be a significant improvement.

I'd much rather they overhaul our antiquated subway system first.

The downtown cars will be 100 per cent low floor, which did add to the cost/reduce the number of cars that could be chosen from.

This is all too late really - the time for meaningful public input in the cars was before contract award. Steve Munro is on the panel and says a lot of things are simply not able to be changed no matter how many people ask for it.

Unhappy Rider - you must be very unhappy in life being only able to do one thing at a time. There is a billion dollar order of subway cars underway in Thunder Bay, but because Bombardier stupidly chose a door manufacturer about to go broke, they are late.

So the TTC wants the public to submit designs for free? Annd if a design is chosen then the designer "will receive credit and become an important part of TTC history"?

Sounds worse than spec work. Eff you, pay me for my talent.

I drive a mobility scooter and the present LRV fleet is unusable to me. Being able to ride an LRV in my scooter would be wonderful. I hope none of you disgruntled folks are ever forced to live with mobility issues in your life. Try walking (riding actually) a mile in my shoes. Then come and complain to me.

These streetcars need to be put on the road as soon as possible. Like bulldogbarks55 said, it's impossible to use the streetcars if your in a wheelchair, which my son is. Our doctor who is awesome and very skilled in handling cases like my son is located in a hospital that is on a streetcar accessible only route which means that I have to hire wheelchair transport, beg for Wheeltrans to give me a slot that's already been taken by a prebooked client (a person who books the same appointment for a weekly/daily basis), take a cab or beg family or friends to drive us around.
I'm sorry if you're upset about the diminished views and the loss of flavour to the city but I think that the TTC should allow all Torontonians to access the TTC, not just limit those special needs folks to only some access.
You should not have to be able bodied to be able to access this beautiful city. My son would love to see the city just as you would, but instead he's confined to limited areas that are accessible.
If you don't think it's a horrible way to live, get your hands on a wheelchair and try to get around the city without setting one foot on the ground and you'll see this really is something that needs to happen now, not later!
