Be part of an official Contact photo exhibit

Posted by Tim / March 28, 2010

This May blogTO will be presenting an official photo exhibit at the 2010 Contact Photography Festival and thanks to the support of Sony make.believe you have the opportunity to be a part of it. All you need to do is submit one or more photos to our photo contest between now and the end of March and cross your fingers that one of your photos will be among the 10 voted by readers and selected by our curatorial team as the ones best representing the theme of the contest (and the exhibit).

CONTEST THEME: 99 CENTS

Our contest and exhibit theme takes inspiration from what might just be the greatest ploy in the history of marketing. The odd pricing of 99 cents is as ubiquitous as it is effective. We see it everywhere, from $0.99 songs on iTunes to $329.99 sofas at Ikea. The psychological influence of 99 cents undoubtedly makes things seem more attainable (and cheaper) than they actually are. Well, so do photographs -- billboards, fashion models, athletes, beautiful landscapes. All of these present us with versions of reality that we crave, but are nevertheless very difficult (and sometimes impossible) to attain.

For this contest we invite you to submit your own photographs that relate to the theme of 99 cents. These could include an obvious representation of the theme with photos of items priced in this manner; or ones based on an interpretation that's not quite as literal.

SUBMISSION PROCESS

UPDATE (APRIL 1ST): THE SUBMISSION PERIOD IS NOW OVER. YOU CAN NOW VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITE PHOTOS HERE.

Dates: May 7th - 16th, 2010

Can you give pixel dimensions instead of dpi? I could have a 1 pixel by 1 pixel image at 300 dpi or one the size of a building at 72 dpi, but something that's 300 pixels by 300 pixels is still the same amount of pixels no matter what dpi it's at.

jacko. it's easy.

12"x300dpi = 3600px
18"x300dpi = 5400px

in case you're wondering that's 19.4 mp.

although you're right, why wouldn't the author just say 5400x3600px.

Hi Joe,

I don't think you should necessarily equate pixels on a sensor to dots printed. How many cameras out there can output 19.4 megapixels?

I don't think you can necessarily equate pixels on a sensor to the number of dots printed. How many cameras out there can output 19 megapixels?

If you're shooting RAW or highest quality JPEG on a 7Mp and up camera, you're likely in good shape to print and retain good viewing quality.

This looks like fun.

Does it matter WHEN the photo was taken?

No -- that's not an issue. Cheers.

Is there a limit to how many photos we can submit?
Tim replying to a comment from Peter / March 10, 2010 at 11:31 am

No. There's no limit. But a max of 1 per photographer will be included in the exhibit.

Does the aspect ratio have to be 2:3 can it be square?
Tim replying to a comment from Ryan / March 22, 2010 at 03:50 pm
user-pic
For consistency we'd like the photos to all be the same aspect ratio

ok gotta say it - 99 cents? what kind of a theme is that??
yeah you could go not so literal, but then it would be about something else. 99 cents is so specific.
did sony ask you to make the theme 99 cents?

We came up with the theme. Sony wasn't involved in the discussions at all. We thought it tied in nicely to the overall theme of CONTACT this year.

Will you be sending out confirmations that the emailed photos were received? How will we know they arrived safely in your inbox?

Thanks

We will be confirming receipt at the end of the submission period for those who have sent the photos via email.

Thanks Tim. Is that a bit late though? If we realize the photos haven't made it, by then it is too late to resubmit (since it's the end of the submission period). Cheers Tim

We're reasonable people. If something was missed somehow we'll be able to get it in.

If we've submitted via email, is it ok to also submit the same photo to the flickr pool?

If you like, but it's not necessary.

Hi everyone. The final five photos have now been selected and the photographers have been contacted. Thanks to all of you who participated. The jury selection wasn't easy and there were lots of good photos that just missed making the cut.

If you want to see what five photos were selected be sure to stop by Show & Tell gallery once the exhibit opens on May 7th.
