Hot Ticket: Alcoholic Faith Mission, You Won't, Future Islands, The Milk Carton Kids, Spiritualized, M83

Concerts TorontoLive music picks for WEDNESDAY MAY 2 through MONDAY APRIL 6, 2012.

WEDNESDAY MAY 2 / ALCOHOLIC FAITH MISSION / THE DRAKE HOTEL / 1150 QUEEN W / $15 / 19+

There's something to be said about a band that takes the road less traveled when it comes to making their music. This is what sets Alcoholic Faith Mission apart from other indie rock bands - much of their music is composed with random household items standing in for instruments. It's a bit gimmicky, and it was much more prevalent in their earlier work, but it's still an interesting experiment. I can't speak on how it translates at a live show, but it should be unique, if nothing else. You Won't will offer support.

DJs battle for Ontario title at the Mod Club May 4th

Posted by Robyn Urback / May 1, 2012

Thre3styleIt's a question that has plagued Toronto — and the province — for eons. No, it's not subways versus streetcars, nor is it where to find the best pulled espresso in the city. No, that elusive question is none other than, "Who's the best party rocker in Ontario?" and it will be settled this Friday night.

Well that was exciting, wasn't it? The Mod Club will be hosting the Ontario finals of Red Bull's Thre3style competition on May 4th, when DJs from across the province will compete to be crowned the best of all music makers. The winner of this regional competition will go on to battle in the national finals in Halifax on May 26, where he or she will get a shot at $2500.

We Were Promised Jetpacks blast off at Lee's Palace

Posted by Adam Brady / April 30, 2012

We Were Promised JetpacksFresh off of playing two sets at Coachella, We Were Promised Jetpacks brought their brooding, intense brand of rock n' roll to Lee's Palace on Friday night. It must've been a big switch to go from Coachella, with its huge, open stages and mobs of people, to the dark and cramped confines of Lee's Palace, but the audience was a rowdy one, and their noisy enthusiasm probably helped the band forget the difference in scale.

Seriously. This crowd was one of the loudest I've heard. Ever.

UK producers host fog-filled rave on holy ground

Posted by Aubrey Jax / April 30, 2012

Addison GrooveToronto's relative lack of mid-size venues is a discussion that pops up often, but what's more interesting is how some resourceful local event programmers are tackling the issue. What's one space that holds a few hundred concert-goers and has great acoustics?

Holding indie shows in churches isn't a new idea, but the twist this weekend at St. Stephen-in-the-Fields was the headliner, Bristol juke producer Addison Groove, wasn't slated until 1AM. This Anglican church near Kensington Market was playing the host to a bona-fide rave (though the 19+ restriction made it clear this would be different than the secreted-away ragers of my teen years).

Red Hot Chili Peppers light a fire at the ACC

Posted by Melody Brown / April 29, 2012

Red Hot Chili PeppersFriday night, for the first time since their Stadium Arcadium tour in 2006, the Red Hot Chili Peppers took to the stage at the Air Canada Centre — complete with dazzling screens of light, goofy humour and, of course, a catalogue of music that's made them one of the marquee acts of the last 20 years or so.
