Hedley wins over Drake at 2014 MMVAs

Posted by Aubrey Jax / June 17, 2014

MMVas 2014The 2014 MMVAs reminded us that while all-ages shows and Girls Rock Camp are cool, many young people embrace a different form of teen culture - namely one where musicians are called "celebrities," because really, what's the difference? Very astute, young teens. Celebrity performers included Lorde, Imagine Dragons, and someone name Kiesza, while the real star of the red carpet was, as always, the deafening noise pollution at Queen and John. Hedley won more awards than Drake this year, to which we throw up our hands and say "do what thou wilt, teens of Canada."

Check out our photo gallery from red carpet and glitzed out stage at the 2014 MMVAs.

How and why did Hedley become Canada's Biggest Band that Nobody Outside Canada has Heard Of (TM)?

Either I'm getting old, or Cancon was better in the 90s.

You're correct on both accounts.

Certainly you are older, but the Canadian "pop" music scene today is simply disgraceful.

Bands and musicians from the golden generation must shake their heads at what the musical landscape has become today and literally feel sick to their stomachs.

The music scene is better than ever, however this is not a part of the modern scene. I'm shocked muchmusic even still exists.

As noted by "id say", they said the "pop" music scene (aka...Much Music crap) is a blight on the musical landscape.

Which it most certainly is.

For as bad as MM is, anyone with any common sense will agree that the music Mm played, etc back in the '90s was vastly superior to anything you would find on there today.

Bring back SLOAN
CaligulaJones / June 17, 2014 at 02:38 pm
Its amazing that people can get awards for standing in front of a green screen and lip syncing...

They award it to whoever attends the MMVAs. After all, wouldn't it be an insult after they decided to show up?

I discredited Hedley for years until I saw them play a stuffy corporate event. They were fantastic: engaging and entertaining and played with the energy as if they were playing a show with paid admissions. I now consider them true, top, professional musicians. They've won me over.
Hillary / June 17, 2014 at 03:16 pm
Oops. Used the word "play" a bit too much there.

Hedley beat Drake? Does anyone except the brainless crappy music sheep really care about either of these mediocre artists? Now is one of the best times for music, there is so much available everywhere. I mean look at all the great artists at NXNE that won't get press like these 2 hacks. Oh wait what is Avril doing? Is Kim Kardasian there...fuck who cares, that shit ain't what music is about. Boycott this coke add award ceremony people.

Who the heck still watches the MMVA's? I'd like to see their Neilson TV rating numbers.

In no particular order, the 90's Canadian bands I grew up on...each better than this utter shit:

I Mother Earth, Sloan, Gandharvas, Tea Party, Rusty, Age of Electric, Matthew Good Band, Crash Test Dummies, Treble Charger, Moist, Econoline Crush, Limblifter, The Odds, The Watchmen...the list goes on.

How did we go from that to Hedley?

I luv Hedley and they put on a great show so it's too bad they were promoting that sucky single. Take a listen to their song Anything and you'll see they're a clever pop band with pseudo-punk trappings and loads of fun. They've been consistently good since they came on the scene.

The show really tanked this year with no live performances from stalwarts Marianas Trench or Down With Webster both of whom are between albums right now....I mean cmon Much...the big finale was Ariana Grande??? A cute song but only worth to see live if Iggy Azalea is there but it's not exactly a bring the house down finale performance. It needed a Billy Talent or something to liven things up.

It just seemed like an awful lot of staging and production for a load of nothing...even Imagine Dragons were abit snoozy....Lorde's loopy but interesting performance was great and so was Kiesza but overall the whole show was a big fail.

"Marianas Trench or Down With Webster" ...

You lost any credibility you had as a commentator.
Alex / June 18, 2014 at 12:18 pm
To echo the sentiments of the other commenters; it is indeed true that no one gives a single flying runny shit about Drake or Hedley, or the MMVA's.
