IN THE NEWS

Death From Above 1979 announce hometown gig

Death From Above 1979, one of the best bands to ever come out of our fair city and one of the names on our most famous Toronto bands list, announced last week that they'll be playing Danforth Music Hall on Boxing Day (Thursday, Dec. 26). The band released a bizarre press release that stated: "Where are they now? Who knows. Where will they be on December 26th 2013? At The Danforth Music Hall in Toronto to celebrate the death of another year. Where will they be in 2014? Another mystery to feed the funeral pyre." Hey, if it means a DFA 1979 show, they can put out any kind of press release that they want. Tickets went on sale last Friday, and they're probably going to sell out fast. Check the band's official site for more info.

THIS WEEK'S HOT TICKETS

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 1 / MATTHEW GOOD / MASSEY HALL / 178 VICTORIA / $39.50 - $59.50 / ALL AGES

I've been a fan of Matthew Good and, previously, his eponymous band since I first heard his 2001 masterpiece The Audio of Being in 2001. I've only had the pleasure of seeing him live once, back in 2008, but it was an awesome show. The man has fantastic stage presence.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 2 / HANNAH GEORGAS / THE GREAT HALL / 1087 QUEEN W / $17.50 / 19+

Over the last few years, Hannah Georgas has quietly made a name for herself as one of the most talented and exciting voices in indie pop. I still remember the first song of hers that I ever heard — the ridiculously-upbeat and frantic "Bang Bang You're Dead," a song which takes me back to a simpler time in life. Whenever music has the power to do that you know it's something special, and Georgas is definitely something special. Sam Cash & The Romantic Dogs and Louise Burns will offer support.
