Blink 182 get nostalgic at the Molson Amphitheatre

Mark SingBack in 2009, I greeted the news that Blink 182 was touring again with surprise and excitement. I was glad that I finally had the chance to see a band that I should have seen years ago. For me, Blink was the band that first got me into music, so the chance to finally see them live was tantalizing to say the least.

Tom SmokeThe guys came out strong, opening with "Feeling This," which erased any doubt I had that maybe the show wouldn't live up to expectations. From that point on, I knew the rest of their set would be what I'd been waiting for.

Tom holding guitarOne of the things I was curious to see was how the band's current makeup compares to the one fans are familiar with from the late 90's and early 2000's. Over the course of the first three songs, it was pretty cleat that this group was comfortable performing with one another. They started cracking the same immature jokes they were known for in the past -- jokes about peeing and Tom masturbating with his guitar. Tom clarified by saying, "I'll embarrass us all I want! Cheer for me!" and the crowd obeyed.

Mark with stageIt was easy to recognize what the majority of the audience were there to see. Thankfully, Blink recognized this too, and played a satisfying amount of their classics, including: "What's My Age Again," "The Rock Song," "All The Small Things," "Carousel," "Stay Together For The Kids" and "Dammit." And I'm really glad they did, because I actually can't stand their new material, with its obvious influence from Tom's side project, Angels and Airwaves. I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one who felt this way, since each time the band played a new song the crowd looked bored and unimpressed.

Travis ParkerAlthough both Tom and Mark had weak vocal moments, I don't think they're the kind of band one goes to see expecting to best vocals. That being said, they made up for it with an energy-filled performance. Moreover, their set design and light show was extremely impressive. And the audience was certainly engaged. It sounded like everyone in the Molson Amphitheatre was singing along to every word of their old songs and they had the audience hanging on to every word of their stage banter.

Mark SingAfter their initial set was finished, the audience waited for the band to perform their encore, though I'm not sure anyone expected what happened next. As the curtain dropped, drummer Travis Barker appeared elevated on a crane over the Molson Amphitheatre. The crane moved him over the crowd, and he began an epic drum solo that was an obvious highlight of the show. After his solo, the band went into "Carousel" and then "Dammit," which seemed to send the crowd into a kind of euphoria.

Travis ParkerAlthough I'm biased by my past love of the band, I was extremely impressed with Blink's performance on Wednesday night. They played enough of the material off their old albums that I could pretend I was a teenager again. And although they may not be the same band they used to be -- they all travel in separate buses apparently -- I'm still glad they're playing music and seem to have fun doing it.

Any photos of the crane? That sounds pretty neat.

I'm sorry, but reading this has me confused. Are you saying you're a fan? If so, is there a reason why your review feels disjointed and reads flat? (Side note: It's "The Rock Show" not "The Rock Song") Also, if you have read any previous reviews or heard the band themselves talk about the show, Travis performs during the encore via a similar set up to the 2009 tour where he is suspended over the crowd. Reading through your review gave me the impression that you didn't fully enjoy your experience. I think you took some great photography. Perhaps you should stick with that.

Daryl - I didn't as I was only permitted to shoot the first three songs.

Elka - I am a fan! Have been for years. I'm sorry seeing Travis coming out on a crane was surprising to me and everyone around me - i dont research previous shows for the same reason i don't like knowing setlists... Surprises are more fun.

I did enjoy my experience. Glad you like the photos!

I don't think the crowd was "bored and unimpressed" with Blink's new stuff, they just weren't cheering and singing along since it was...new.
I've been a fan of this band since the album Cheshire Cat came out and I was impressed with the new stuff I heard that night. Also, I'm not sure it's fair to say they really "got nostalgic" given that they only played three songs from their first two albums. they could have been far more nostalgic for my liking. Though I'm a bit biased since I'm old and wanted to hear tunes from my high school days.

Loved the show. Loved the new songs.

Loved that Mark got the entire crowd to sing "O Canada".

Great night.
