Hot Ticket: Basia Bulat, Tegan & Sara, Whale Tooth, The Cribs, Will Currie, Julie Fader, & more...
Live music picks for WEDNESDAY JANUARY 13 through TUESDAY JANUARY 19, 2010.
WEDNESDAY JANUARY 13 / WEDNESDAYS GO POP / SUPERMARKET / 268 AUGUSTA AVE / PWYC / 19+
The new weekly independent music showcase starts at 9:30pm and offers brief introductions to rising Toronto musicians for as little or as much as you can afford. Tonight's PWYC show at the Supermarket features local singer/songwriter JOHN TAYLES, Burlington indie rockers SANDMAN VIPER COMMAND, recent disBAND contestants GOOD & BROKEN and Waterloo's WILL CURRIE & THE COUNTRY FRENCH.
THURSDAY JANUARY 14 / JULIE FADER & DANIEL ROMANO / EL MOCAMBO / 464 SPADINA AVE / $7 / 19+
JULIE FADER will be playing "a little mid-January celebration" featuring a special guest band that includes GRAHAM WALSH of HOLY FUCK this coming Thursday at the Elmo. She's invited her friends ANDREW SISK (of SHARE) and DANIEL ROMANO (of ATTACK IN BLACK) to kick the evening off. Sisk will be opening solo, but Romano will be joined by a few family members and friends for a set that will likely showcase his most recent work with FRED SQUIRE and JULIE DOIRON.
FRIDAY JANUARY 15 / THE CRIBS / PHOENIX / 410 SHERBOURNE ST / $19.50 / 19+
UK indie rockers THE CRIBS stop by the Phoenix on Friday night to showcase 2009's Ignore the Ignorant - their first release with new guitarist JOHNNY MARR, formerly of THE SMITHS and currently of MODEST MOUSE. They'll be joined by Americana rockers THE DEAD TREES and former MOLDY PEACH turned solo musician ADAM GREEN.
SATURDAY JANUARY 16 / BASIA BULAT / TRINITY ST. PAULS / 427 BLOOR ST W / $20 / ALL AGES
BASIA BULAT will be playing a pre-release show on Saturday night in advance of the January 26th release of her sophomore effort Heart of My Own. The album sees BASIA further develop the indie-folk-pop sound of her debut Oh, My Darling, and will surely direct her career to new and exciting heights. With Rough Trade Records handling European distribution, it looks like 2010 is going to be a huge year for the Polaris shortlisted songstress.
SATURDAY JANUARY 16 / DAPS ALL AGES CONCERT / KAPISANAN PHILIPPINE CENTRE FOR ARTS & CULTURE / 167 AUGUSTA AVE / $7 / ALL AGES
The fourth DAPS ALL AGES CONCERT moves from their original home at Rolly's Garage to the Kapisanan Philippine Centre. Created by the DAPS DUO (TONKA & PUMA, HOODED FANG), these shows aim to provide all ages access to Toronto's diverse talent pool. Saturday night's show features performances from CASEY MECIJA of OHBIJOU, SEAN NICHOLAS SAVAGE, SANTA GUERRILLA, THE MILES and RUZAN ORKESTAR. The show kicks off at 2:30pm, with doors opening a half hour earlier. More info at the event page.

SUNDAY JANUARY 17 / WAVELENGTH 496: WHALE TOOTH / THE GARRISON / 1197 DUNDAS ST W / PWYC / 19+
WL496 features Newmarket indie rockers THE ELWINS, Waterloo's TYSON & THE TREPIDS and local buzz band WHALE TOOTH. Prepare for a night of dance-rock bliss as all three acts play exuberant brands of pop music that will make you forget you have to go back to work the next morning. Whale Tooth emerge from a small period of hibernation for one of the final Sunday night Wavelength shows in the decade-spanning concert series, so expect the Garrison to be bubbling with excitement.
MONDAY JANUARY 18 / JOEY MCINTYRE / MOD CLUB / 722 COLLEGE ST / $39.50 / ALL AGES
Former NEW KID ON THE BLOCK heartthrob JOEY MCINTYRE stops by the Mod Club Theatre for a show to promote his latest solo release, the seven-song EP Here We Go Again. After the massive cash grab that was the NKOTB reunion tour in 2008 and 2009, it looks like MCINTYRE is shifting his focus back to work that sadly will not feature any WAHLBERG contributions.
TUESDAY JANUARY 19 / TEGAN & SARA / MASSEY HALL / 178 VICTORIA ST / $29.50 - $34.50 / ALL AGES
TEGAN & SARA headline a sold out show at Massey Hall on Tuesday alongside AN HORSE, followed the next day by a general admission performance at the Kool Haus with GENTLEMAN REG. The BC sisters are currently touring across Canada before they depart on a massive US tour throughout the spring to capitalize on the success of Sainthood, their critically acclaimed follow-up to 2007's The Con. They'll be joined by Australian indie-pop duo AN HORSE, whom they toured the US with throughout 2008.
