Toronto Live Music Concert Listings - Hey Rosetta

Hot Ticket: Phoenix, Thunderheist, The Hoa Hoa's, Russian Circles, Hey Rosetta! & More...

Live music picks for WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 2 through TUESDAY DECEMBER 8, 2009.

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 2 / EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME / SONIC BOOM (IN-STORE) / 512 BLOOR ST W / FREE / ALL AGES
Fresh off the release of their infectious self-titled debut EP, Toronto's own EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME will take to the tiny basement stage at Sonic Boom for an up close and personal in-store session. The six-piece collective have already made their rounds throughout the local scene, with members having previously played with everyone from SARAH HARMER to JASON COLLETT. Show starts at 7pm and is completely free, though bringing a food donation for the Daily Bread Food Bank is encouraged.

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 2 / EVENING HYMNS / SOUNDSCAPES (IN-STORE) / 572 COLLEGE ST / FREE / ALL AGES
Peterborough's JONAS BONNETTA is riding high on the success of Spirit Guides, his ethereal yet intimate debut album under the moniker EVENING HYMNS. Given that the backing band on the disc is comprised of members of THE WOODEN SKY, FOREST CITY LOVERS and THE D'URBERVILLES, I wouldn't be surprised to see quite a few familiar faces supporting Bonnetta as he plays a short in-store set at Soundscapes tonight.

THURSDAY DECEMBER 3 / THUNDERHEIST / MOD CLUB / 722 COLLEGE ST / $15 / 19+
Producer GRAHMZILLA and MC ISIS headline the Mod Club on Thursday night, making their last Toronto appearance prior to taking a lengthy hiatus to focus on solo careers. Catch THUNDERHEIST while you can, because other than a few sparse dates in Australia in January, they'll be hibernating through 2010 and possibly beyond.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 4 / THE HOA HOA'S / SONIC BOOM (IN-STORE) / 512 BLOOR ST W / FREE / ALL AGES
POP/DRONE/PEDALS, the stellar sophomore effort from local psych-rockers THE HOA HOA'S was officially released yesterday. To celebrate, they'll play a free in-store session at Sonic Boom at 6pm before heading down to the Silver Dollar (464 Spadina Ave) for their official album release show, where they'll be joined by labelmates THE DISRAELIS, local unsigned act ACTION MAKES and Brooklyn rockers YOUR 33 BLACK ANGELS.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 4 / UNBELIEVERS & THE NIGHTMARES / BOVINE SEX CLUB / 542 QUEEN ST W / $5 / 19+
Toronto's UNBELIEVERS will play their last local show of 2009 alongside Woodbridge's PERMANENT BASTARDS and THE NIGHTMARES, who recently opened up for THE MISFITS. UNBELIEVERS just released their debut full-length The Guts and the Gory a few weeks ago, with acclaimed producer JOE QUEER of THE QUEERS helping them to craft out an infectious collection of upbeat punk rock songs to share with the masses.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 4 & SATURDAY DECEMBER 5 / HEY ROSETTA / HORSESHOE TAVERN / 368 QUEEN ST W / $15 / 19+
Polaris short-listed six-piece HEY ROSETTA! return to Toronto this weekend, headlining a pair of dates at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern as the venue celebrates its 62nd birthday. While the band may have lost the Polaris to FUCKED UP, they deservedly raked in a cool $25K as the recipient of the Album of the Year award at the inaugural Verge Music Awards in September 2008. Joining Newfoundland's Hey Rosetta! are NYC folk rockers LA STRADA and Toronto's own JULIE FADER.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 5 / PHOENIX / SOUND ACADEMY / 11 POLSON ST / $28.50 / ALL AGES
I've been hearing French synth-rockers PHOENIX everywhere recently - TV, movies, trailers, radio and even in video games. Their innocuous, inoffensive brand of electro-infused rock has catapulted them to international success, and they've called upon local heroes HOLY FUCK to warm up the massive crowd expected to flock down to the Docks this Saturday night.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 6 / O PIONEERS!!! & THE ROMAN LINE / RANCHO RELAXO / 300 COLLEGE ST / $5 / 19+
Local punk rock quartet THE ROMAN LINE celebrate the release of their debut full length Morning Portraits with a show alongside Houston's O PIONEERS!!!, Windsor, Ontario's SHARED ARMS and Toronto's own JUNIOR BATTLES. Head to the show to grab the album, or check out a free stream through Punknews.org. I can't recommend this record enough - straight up, gritty punk rock fueled by Jack Daniels, big city angst and a handful of failed relationships.

MONDAY DECEMBER 7 / THURSDAY & DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN / MOD CLUB / 722 COLLEGE ST / $15 / ALL AGES
Post-hardcore legends THURSDAY venture north from New Jersey to co-headline the Mod Club Theatre with none other than math rock gods THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN. As the DEP hype up Option Paralysis, their forthcoming follow-up to 2007's Ire Works, Thursday are touring in support of Epitaph's recent digital re-release of Common Existence. Side One Dummy's FAKE PROBLEMS and LA's ENDLESS HALLWAY will start the night off early.

TUESDAY DECEMBER 8 / RUSSIAN CIRCLES / SNEAKY DEE'S / 431 COLLEGE ST / $11.50 / 19+
Post-rock/metal experimentalists RUSSIAN CIRCLES have steadily been releasing their own brand of sprawling, instrumental music since their formation in 2004. Their most recent release Geneva sees the Chicago trio further building upon the soft-to-heavy formula popularized by bands like MOGWAI or EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY. Joining RUSSIAN CIRCLES are post-hardcore act YOUNG WIDOWS and psychedelic rockers THE PHANTOM FAMILY HALO.
