Modeselektor at The Social
Modeselektor seem to be getting bigger and bigger these days, playing larger festivals and working on a wide range of collaborations with some of the best in electronic music and high figures such as Radiohead.
Still it's funny that when playing in Toronto, a venue like The Soush is more than large enough.
I remember last time Modeslektor was in town, in 2006. They played at one of the classic Math Hooker parties that Knifehandchop and Sincere Trade used to throw. I think till today it's probably one of the best shows I've been to at the El Mo upstairs, a sweaty messy clash of heavy beats.
In 2007, they released Happy Birthday! Under Ellen Allien's BPitch Control. The album made it into my top 10 of the year and the track Godspeed has remained on heavy rotation in my playlists.
Last year I saw Modeselektor again at Mutek in Montreal. They played a superb set making themselves the superstars of the festival.
With their great presence on stage, innovative live performance and their close collaboration with VJ Pfadfinderei their shows always captivate the audience, and leave them wanting more! So I'm pretty excited about this Thursday, where I'll be able to see the guys once more in an intimate performance.
I'm a little upset though that the event is at The Social, possibly one of the worst venues for live shows, so I hope they at least rented some decent extra speakers to compensate for their heavy bass. It's also sad that we won't be able to enjoy their great audio/visual collaboration since Pfadfinderei wont be around for this show. But whatever, they will still rock the house no problem. Oh, and prepare to get soaked with champagne!
I've made here a little preview playlist that will get you going, so you won't be able to blame the snow, the cold, or your sister for misssing this one!

I thought Mutek was the band's North American debut? They were here in 2006?? WHY WASN'T I INFORMED.
Haha, yeah... those where the pre-facebook days where you had to go the record shops and collect flyers to see what was going on
You can see some more documentation here in some pictures taken by Carl aka Sincere Trade aka Eroder - http://www.eroder.com/mh_photos/categories.php?cat_id=6&sessionid=cc236f1f78bc3cf46131127353f05b80

SHiiiittttt this is going to be pretty bad ass. Housemeister and TMDP too! a little blend of international with the locals can only make for a great party!
At the risk of suggesting that the Emperor wears no clothes, Modeselektor were really iffy at MUTEK last year (my review). I love their sound design but man, a Hyper Hyper remix? I guess I wasn't ironic and/or ravestalgic enough to appreciate it.
Methinks they should keep hanging out w/ Thom Yorke and duck out of the Berlin nightlife for a bit.
That Byetone remix on the other hand.. ;)
Haha, yeah i know what you mean, it's kinda sad to see Mutek fold to the crowd pleasing/party music after all these years, specially the nights at Metropolis. Still i really liked Modeselektor that night and i think most people too!
Yeah Byetone is so good! Plastic Star was one of my favourite tracks last year, specially the Alva Noto version
For those who haven't heard
