Beats, Breaks and Culture Festival 2008

beats breaks and cuture festival at the harbourfront
This weekend Beats, Breaks & Culture will celebrate its fifth year anniversary, bringing some of the best new music and culture to the Harbourfront Centre.

This year in particular the line up is quite impressive, with some of the best national and international talent such as Ladytron and Crystal Castles on the bill.

And did I mention that admission is FREE?

Usually for Beats, Breaks & Culture weekend I pretty much camp at Harbourfront. There is something about the festival (and most of the World Routes Series) that makes it one of my favourite music events of the year. Enjoying the lake breeze while listening to great music for free, watching the sunset to your favourite tunes played live just a few meters from you, eating corn on the stick or some jerk chicken with a beer - it just doesn't get any better.

I'm mostly excited about Saturday's locals lineup: Woodhands, Thunderheist and Crystal Castles at the Sirius Satellite Radio Stage. It's great too see so much talent coming out from our very own hometown Toronto!

But Beats, Breaks & Culture is not only about the big name acts though. Make sure to check all the other side events that are going on like the Graffiti Competition hosted by Manifesto at the Ann Tindal Lawn, or the DJ-centric events such as 7th Heaven, which is one of my favorite dance parties in Toronto, at the Brigantine Room. You can even get a cool haircut for free, courtesy of Marca College.

Here is a schedule with my personal highlights. For a full schedule please visit the Beats, Breaks & Culture official site.

Saw Ladytron on the Light and Magic tour. They were kinda wooden but the music was great. I hear they've gotten even woodenier but for free you can't go wrong.

And fuck me, Woodhands. Woodhands, fuck me.

Looking forward to Thunderheist as well - they and Crystal Castles are joining NIN on tour but will play free for us on Saturday. Will post a review :)

Yes it should be great! Thunderheist always put great live shows, and people love it!
Too bad the seating at the Sirius Satellite Radio Stage is so uncomfortable and makes people passive since you can really move or anything. They should make those benches movable and adjust depending the event.

People didn't have too much trouble moving for Egypt80 on Wednesday .. pretty much everyone was standing infront of their seats !

Went to see Crystal Castles tonight... can someone give me a second opinion... I thought it was pretty terrible, but maybe someone could explain to me what I was missing... what was the woman doing on stage? Looking forward to a review of the show so maybe I can figure out why that was or was not good.

She seemed to be pretty much losing her shit, Gregg. The show took a pretty sharp downturn when sound / mic problems cropped up, which seems to be why Alice basically lay on the stage and then proceeded to trash it before walking off several songs short of a full set. Strangely from the reviews I've read so far, I wonder if anyone listens to the damn music at shows, because nobody seemed to realize they'd hit that snag (and similarly I haven't heard many reviews that identified that Ladytron was also having trouble with their set at times). Open yer ears and put your damn digicam down for a minute, blog concert reviewers.

Whoever is doing CC's live drums is much better behind the kit than the guy that Ladytron brought. Dude, you are tight.

Yeah, it was too bad that they were having audio problems. When i saw Lee Scratch Perry on Monday i was saying how good and crisp the sound was and then with Ladytron and CC went bad. (Although Woodhands and Thunderheist was good to me)
I think people liked CC show (including me) because the beats were good and dark enough so the voice didn't matter and it was so packed that it almost felt like you where in the middle of a club with background music.

Haha, i was also looking at the drummer from Ladytron and tought he was super lame compared to the guy from Woodhands or CC drummer.
