Toronto Pride 2007 To Welcome the Indigo Girls

Indigo Girls
The Indigo Girls headlining Canada's largest gay pride festival. Yep, it seems like an obvious fit, but with Toronto Pride growing more and more commercial every year, I'm finding the announcement today a pleasant surprise.

Before mainstream film/tv/music became enthralled by gay storylines -- or I shoud say, actors performing *as* gay people -- and certainly before coming out could ever be debated a 'good' thing for your career, there were the Indigo Girls. Quintessential gay folk songwriters, dueling on guitar and writing folk music that's loved and cherished by the LGBT community and beyond.

So here's a nod of approval to Toronto Pride for trying to 'keep it real'.

Why is it Pride Toronto can splash $10,000 on the having the Indigo Girls headline their festival, but their top Publicity, Production & Technical Management volunteers get paid not a penny.

That is, of course, what a volunteer is really.

But seriously, I suppose as long as there are community volunteers, those positions will be volunteer... the event is now a corporate dream!

Still, the more commercial things get, the more unacceptable it'll be for them to expect the project to run entirely on volunteer participation. Money needs to go BACK into the community.
