Last week I previewed a slate of movies that are going to make the second half of 2006 worth spending in the darkened theatres... and this week, I pop out a look at the first one, revisionist British horror CHUD-fest The Descent.

Today's podcast includes:

  • Review of The Descent
  • news on Venus and Pleasure Dome
  • DVDs for August
  • TIFF news

hey, i love the show, and your reviews are totally informative, and dead on.

where'd you find that info about the re-release of the Lord of the Rings trilogy? I'm definately one of those people who will rebuy it (after a sell off of the older one on ebay). Just looking for a bit of info if you have it.

cheers!

Hey Matt, most of my DVD information comes from The Digital Bits (www.thedigitalbits.com) which is downright sketchy in terms of its update frequency, and sort of annoying in its tendency to pimp Star Trek: Enterprise like it's the best thing in the history of the universe, but is otherwise reliable for DVD news and views.

The documentaries on the new LOTR DVDs are by Costa Botes, a longtime friend of Peter Jackson's. (They made "Forgotten Silver" together, a mockumentary which is worth checking out.)

I wouldn't go selling your Extended Edition DVDs just yet, though... the picture quality on the new DVDs is said to be significantly lower than that on the old ones (because they're cramming the complete extended cuts of the films onto single disks)... and besides, those old special features kicked ass!
